Minelab Manticore

If I'm not digging some trash, DigDog, I know I'm missing some good targets. Yesterday I almost passed over a low coin reading on the Nox highly suspecting is was a crushed bottle cap or at best a zinc cent. It turned out to be a small 925 marked ladies ring. For turf hunting, if the Manticore was to get another inch depth over the Nox or my F 75, I would consider that a break through. And who knows, maybe it will even get a little more. If the Manticore turns out to be just another good detector, so be it. In the mean time, until I and others prove otherwise, I will simply keep and open mind. HH Jim Tn
The key word here is SOME trash and at this point I see no indication from the air tests done so far that there is any real breakthrough in separating "good" trash from "bad". When i can see it separating a ball of foil or foil bottle seal from a comparably sized gold ring I will see progress I can sink my money into.

I agree. No manual and only some air test videos is a hard sale though.
Maybe I haven’t seen them but the manufacturer down to the testers just show some videos of, well here it is, isn’t it pretty, lights up really nice at night and air tests nice with some good tones.
Is there any with,ok here is the 800 over a target in the ground and here is the core, or here is the core picking up a target and now the 800 over the same target. Any actual real life testing and comparison videos, not with another brand but show how it’s better than its predecessor.
I don’t think its too much to ask for if you want that much more for it.
Sell me on the product’s performance being better not just cosmetics and some bells and whistles.
As for alot of things like tones and stuff could have been overhauled in a software update. Similar to a new operating system on your phone, computer but then again they rather sell a whole new unit I imagine.
What good is a updatable system if you can’t incorporate those features into what you already have.
Have to split up what is software improvements and what is hardware.
You can throw a new shaft, headset, some decals on your 800 as well but if the screen is the same i wonder if they could just have done a new software update with the 2D feature on the 800.
Is the 2d a hardware upgrade as well as software. I don’t know. Could they have just did a control box upgrade if all else is the same as a cost saving option.
Many ways to skin a cat as they say.
They were creative in for example the Xterra no need to buy a whole new detector just swap out the coil and you have different detectors. Same principle could have came up with different control boxes to swap out and keep your shafts and coils
would probably been a good option to give people who couldn’t necessarily afford a whole new unit and keep the product line going.
Milwaukee, Dewalt and other companies took that approach with selling batteries and made it hard to switch to the competitor.
Minelab never puts out those videos you are asking for, PRE-release. They didn't with the EQX, either. Anyone who "field tests" the machine, pre-release, is sworn to secrecy by an NDA. They are not ALLOWED to talk. The videos you hope for, are always done POST-release, by customers who purchase the unit, and to that testing. Minelab is very secretive about their tech; they do NOT allow an in-depth performance details to be shown pre-release. They put out videos that show just the basics, and no more, prior to the machine being "on the market."

The videos you want, will come. And I feel confident the Manticore will be more than just "a cosmetic upgrade to the Equinox." :)

The new Equinox 700 and 900 look impressive as well.

lighter weight
water proof,
new cuff material,
119 VID range,
sensativity increaded from 25 to 28,
back light,
flash light,
vibration,
collapsabile,
carbon fiber,
headphones will interchange with the new Manticore.

Although the Manticore is top of the line, as far as these 3 new models go, I assume the 700 and 900 would appeal to those with smaller budgets.
I assume the 700 and 900 will be priced similar to the 600 and 800, but no details on price yet.
At $1599, the Manticore looks like a top notch offering.

Unfortunately, if that's what you are hoping for, it's not going to happen -- not with the Manticore, or any other new machines anytime soon. That ability does not exist with current detecting technology. It would require an ability to measure "density" of an in-ground target, and at this point, that technology has not been developed and brought to market. It would be a game-changing paradigm shift in detector technology, akin to "landing a man on the moon" type of thing; in other words, a HUGE technological jump. That may be a BIT of an exaggeration, but not a ton. The way detectors work (the approach that is currently used by detector manufacturers for detecting metal targets in the ground, from a "physics" perspective) simply does NOT permit what you (we) would like to see. It would take a whole new, different type of technology to measure THAT property (density), as opposed to the current approach that is used.

Is the Manticore 'Simultaneous'? Will it scan 'Simultaneous' freq./kHz and indicate on the display the freq./kHz that it has below the coil?
Very simple question!
Thanks!

Not much of a price increase on the new Equinox models, for all the additional features!
Similar to the Manticore, minus the 2D screen information.
A model for numerous budgets.

Guys close to me RI don’t know how he got one said had it awhile?

DigDog -- Minelab's mantra is "performance is everything," and they usually deliver. I don't expect the MC to be "leaps and bounds" ahead of the Equinox, but I do expect small improvements in the performance. But, even so, I am certain I will be digging plenty of trash with it, as there's no way to avoid that!

Steve I wish there was more informative videos and literature on it. Everything is very generic like they can apply the ads and videos to almost any detector. Look you can go in the water with it, look you can find rings, look you can find coins, look it lights up at night, look it sounds off on all these different targets. As you say for a serious player in manufacturing detectors where performance is everything, they don’t show alot about how it performs better. I guess we just have faith they will deliver.
Call me old school. I like to see it perform first. There is an old school of thought in sales. Sell the sizzle not the steak. I just see alot of sizzle i guess.
Maybe one of the new Equinox’s might be a better choice. The 700 or 900 probably a spin off of the 600 and 800

Couldn't agree more if I'm buying a lamborghini I want to know the performance spec not that it can drive down the road like every other car

Why not show its performance pre sale though, not giving away any secrets.
When I sold Rescue tools like the jaws of life, (the inventors of the tool, and a household name)the users firemen and women they just didn’t take our word for it they wanted to actually see it perform. We would go to a place with some junk cars and demonstrate how they performed and these were people that were spending money that wasn’t even theirs, and they still wanted to see it perform first I don’t see how that has to be a big secret.
So basically, you can only see how it performs only after you buy it?
Remember when they first started selling slick 50 they had videos where they drain the oil in the car and still ran them around with no oil in the engine to show how well it worked seeing is believing it’s actually one of the best ways to sell a product when you’re not showing how something works. It has to make you wonder.

"Patience grasshopper." They have only been in testers hands and just today can they began talking much about the detector. Once they hit the dealers within a few days we'll be flooded with all kinds of tests and hunts. You haven't sounded very interested in one, anyway, so why the big rush to see its performance, or lack of for the price? HH jim tn

Have been interested in possibly a 800 but all the hype make it sound like that is old technology that everyone is dumping now. Before the new ones were gone for good would like to compare the two but now all of a sudden there is a 700 and 900. Wasn’t sure if that was a typo or actually new detectors.
Now don’t see spending money on a 800 when the 900’s are out.
If you already have a 800 then I guess no hurry but again with a 900 coming out to replace them that changes everything.
I don’t know why someone would get a 800 at this point

I agree , and it's becoming clear "The Beast" is just a bowser just like the NOX failed to "make all detectors obsolete" , especially after Tom risked his salary to tell us that the big "advancements" in the MC revolves around EMI mitigation and beach hunting. I am beginning to believe that once again Minelab's product is dwarfed by their propaganda.

Thinking the same thing. It really is a good detector and If priced right would be a good up grade for many detectorists, however. While I'm not sure I agree with doing a 700 and 900, they are an up grade from the 600 and 800 and give us a couple more options to choose from....and that's a good thing I do believe. HH Jim Tn
