    For beach hunting I can think of a few good reasons ... The smaller coil covers less area but has less ground noise to deal with. The smaller coil pinpoints faster. The smaller coil is lighter to swing.

    Started way back in 1970's with a Singer Metrotech BFO detector. Back then silver was easy to find just about anywhere and nobody hunted the shallow water.

    I did the update today as well. The manual does not really say how to do it but there are instructions that download with the update file telling you how to. Also it tells you what things it is updating. Basically you connect the charging cord to your computer, press and hold the up arrow button...
