War nickels...I can't figure em out

Now that you mention it I remember finding several war nickels at one spot a few years back and the VDI's weren't consistent at all. I just figured it was adjacent trash skewing the #'s. I wonder if they alloyed them with a wide range of materials ?

Correct me if I am wrong

I've done the same thing with some listings on e-bay also Bill. Usually the seller is very appreciative (it will eventually save everyone a big hassle) and some don't want to be bothered . . .go figure. You did what you could to help . . .

    55 VDI on a 1924 wheat penny . .?

Hunted a friends yard the other day for the 2nd or 3rd time and made a strange discovery and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about it. I hit a target bouncing betweem mid 40's and mid 50's VDI giving a solid, slightly breaking signal 3"down. I was hoping IH penny as I stalked it down into...

    Silver drought ends . . . and it's a good one

I had just gotten home, dejected from being turned down to hunt a spot in a prime location. I decided to take the MXT 300 out into my backyard to put around for awhile before work. I have the 300mm coil strapped onto it so I decided to see if there were any deep targets I've missed in the...

    Costco's $1million diamond ring !?!

I just read about it this a.m. Looks to probably be platinum w/a 6.77ct rock ! Costco's offering it discounted to $1mil. from $1.6mil. Be sure and check those "dirty" low VDI signals everyone . . .

Thanks for the support everyone . . .

No need to respond to this thread. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone on the forum for all the encouragement and support I've received regarding my recent bad luck and forced MD'ing layoff. For those unaware, I recently went through a terrible run of misfortune that included 2 car...

    Silver doesn't just sink . . .

. . . apparently it also burrows South. Two silver coins this year and they're both Canadian ?!?? Joel . . . you know anything about this ? LOL I think they are remarkably beautiful coins. They were found on opposite sides of town so it wasn't just one Canuck being careless with their change...

    I didn't get the job . . .

. . but the consolation prize is fine with me. I went on a job interview recently and while I was there I noticed several areas on the property that were in bad need of a 5.3 coil massage. One old date palm type palm tree caught my eye in particular. A few feet from that tree I hit the 25' S...

    Help w/photo attachments please?

Hi, I already understand how to resize and attach photos to my posts. My question is how do you provide the option to "click to see enlarged photo" on the pics. I see the little black bar beneath photos on others posts and I'd like to have that on the photos I attach so they can be enlarged as...

If You're REALLY looking for gold in the dirt . .

. . .be prepared for these. The vets are all too aware but for any starry-eyed newbies with visions of pockets full of gold jewelry, THIS is the reality. These represent about one year of pretty intensive hunting and mind you, this is ONLY the pulltab trash I've dug. I save them for charity (and...

    A Hot MXT !?!

No, not stolen I mean a harder/deeper hitting machine. I digress . . .I just recently picked up a nice MXT 300. I had been using another std MXT for about a year and a half until I ran into some bad luck (ripoffs) and had to replace it. Well I've been out on a couple of long hunts with it now...

Best coil to find small gold chain on the MXT ?

I'm heading out later to search for a lost gold chain w/small links and I wanted to get some input on my coil choice. The necklace should be pretty shallow and I was contemplating whether to first use the 4x6, 5.3 or the 6x10. Yes, I will be bringing all three but I'd like to hear what others...

    MXT Ground Tracking...

I've read about it numerous times and experienced it first hand but what is it about the MXT that makes it so adept at ground tracking (and hence ground balancing) as opposed to other machines ? Is it something inherent to it's higher (than most) search frequency or is it something unique in...

    Only one hunt left now...

..after doing everything I can to avoid selling the one thing I DIDN'T want to part with to pay rent, that decision was made for (taken from ?) me yesterday, 12/24. Someone broke the window in my borrowed car (truck quit working) and stole all my hard won gear. I have no options to replace it...

Careful folks, these are still dangerous....

...even when the head's cut off. This one still managed to steal one last quarter (signal) from me. I've always hated these things. Had to saw through the 3/4" root that had punched the hole in the glass to get it out....think I'll give it a final "burial at sea".

    MXT & 18" Excelerator coil..

..does anyone here have any experience w/this combo ? I recently recieved an Excelerator II Pro in a trade but I'm afraid it is bad. I tried it out for the first time but I couldn't get any solid signals so I tried to test a quarter sitting on a piece of clean ground and could barely get it to...

    One last "first"...

...for my first year in. Today marks one year to the day I started detecting. (not counting a short stint in the early 70's). About 10 months with the MXT. I finished it up in style with one last "first" for the year on my very last hunt before the rains set in. Found my first Barber Dime, a...

    Where I hunt...

Thought I'd take time while it's storming to share some photos of one of the places I've hunted with any others who are house-bound from the bad weather. I've hunted this place several times. Found a nice pocketful of clad the first time I hunted it when I was starting out (including a couple...

We threw 2 MXT's at em today...

...and we did o.k. My "pupil" Lorrie made the big score today with her first gold, a large 14K mens white-gold band ! I started Lorrie in MD'ing and picked her up an MXT some months back. She only has about 30-40 hours in so I took her to a new spot I scouted hoping to help put her on her first...

Couple wheats and a mystery silver piece...

Decided to mix it up and use the 950 coil today. Managed 2 wheats (1937 S and 1944 D) The 44' was on the surface right below the grass. I also pulled this unknown piece of old silver late in the hunt. I posted details on the Whatzit forum. If anyone has any idea what the silver piece is I'd...
