    A mixed signal is the correct response. Brass liner, bolsters & pins. Carbon steel blades. I have always liked finding pocket knives. Probably have dug 20+. That is a swayback Case, it was a quality knife.

    For hard dry clay ground a shovel is not very effective. I have had better use with a heavy pick hoe. You have to dig a wide hole to not damage the target.

    Exactly true. Many of my sites are down to only iffy signal targets. You learn to go slow & investigate each all the way around & dig the ones that have that little bit of extra sound to them. You get a nice surprise often enough to keep going.
