Hey Guys,
Sorry I'm just now seeing this. Been away for a family emergency.
Both of you are correct in saying that other machines are needed for testing, etc. But that wasn't the sole purpose of my tests here. I simply wanted to show the beginner to average metal detectorist what kind of targets that are left behind either by a depth issue or by a masking issue. In this case, we have been hitting this location, which is our front yard in Tennessee, for almost 3 years now. It has produced tons of relics by using White's Machines. I knew there had to be a better way of finding the 'hidden' items.
I see the point in making comparisions but I do believe what you posted in youtube, you strike me as an honest, no nonsense person who loves the sport and I know you loved that large cent, your hands were quivering! Did you sleep that night?
The stock 950 is a great all around coil. But, when it comes to targets being close together, it is a challenge for the coil to separate a good button from a bad iron nail. Especially below 5 inches.
The 6x10 coil is a great separating coil, but it lacks in depth, especially in low-mineralized soil.
The Super 12 is similar to the 950 in that it is very tough to separate targets.
Enter the SEF Coil. Now, when I attached this coil to my MXT, I thought right away that the weight is a little more than either of those 3 aforementioned coils. Regardless, I am in my mid 20s and was able to swing 8 hours each day for 2 weekends.
What will be saying though in months ahead if you are using that coil day in and day out. Repetition is a slow erosive process. The Whites are better balanced than the Minelabs so you would not be swinging that 15x12 8 hours a day. Then again I know the SEF would throw that balance off to a degree too. That would grind me down and I have no shoulder problems, I am 5'9" and I weigh 227 lbs and I am 46 going on 47 years old and I lift and do cardio 5 days a week at Gold's Gym. It's all muscle. I am in outstanding shape for a guy my age and I look like I am in my low 30's. ANy imbalance in the balance of machine when coupled with repetitive movement over many hours will grind any one down. I know the White's are well balanced because I met up with a guy who was swinging a WHite's and I asked to hold it cause I know they are light and balanced well. He had a stock 950 on. I said,Here hold mine (SE) and he said man, that's heavy and he was a big guy, actually he was probably about the same weight as you but in all fairness he wasn't in a good shape as you and he was at least twice your age (early 50's)
The first performance advantage of the SEF that I noticed is the ability to separate targets. The recovery speed seems a little quicker than the 6x10 allowing it to pick up targets close together. Another advantage is that it reaches down where other coils that I have mentioned haven't been yet.
That has been attested to and I do not doubt you on that statement
I am planning to do more tests with this coil in the future and will see about including other machines with other coils as a side by side comparison. But for the test that was filmed above, it serves it purpose to showing White's users that there are other coils choices than the White's manufactured coils that can and do work better in most cases.
In my opinion any WHite's user or anyone with any other brand who doesn't acquire this coil for their arsenal is short changing himself big time!
Keep up the good work Ian
