Not a candidate for an ANACS slab but it's sure pretty to me.

Got out of the Jeep, found a clear spot to noise cancel (not easy), took a few swings, and got a nice tone. About 8" down I saw it in the hole and new immediately what that was. (Still can't yet figure out why I keep finding the best things on an outing in the first hole or two. Whatever it is, I have to repeat it!)

It's a 13-star. (Not the best pic.) Anyone know if there's an online site that helps ID the Newcomb varieties? My library system doesn't have his book.

Thanks. coinfacts is often the place I go to look for info. I'd seen they listed the varieties and have pictures but without knowing what I'm looking for, I draw a blank when comparing the different images. (Even set it so I could toggle back and forth between two windows of N1 and N2 so the images were in the same location but, other than the rotation, couldn't see any difference except perhaps a dent in the side of one and maybe a blip of some sort in the "C".) Though maybe if I put them in Photoshop and rotated them to match I could find something. But, without text, I may be finding something that's just a coin flaw as opposed to a die difference.
 
I love seeing these.That one looks like it was dropped in pretty nice shape.To bad they get so chewed up in the ground.What type of site was it found on?GR
 
I get on streaks like that sometimes....First target is good and the rest of the hunt junk...it happens alot at the beach....then a diff. streak accures.....nothing for a few hours then I bee line it to bath room or truck for something and BAM! Keeper......its weird....But who cares....a keeper is a keeper no matter how it happens....it keeps it interesting.....Great find....ruff copper or not....its still a LC!!! :super:
 
Yeah, it does look like it was in nice shape before it's burial (and subsequent resurrection).

The site is a relatively modern park around a pond that was a gravel pit until, I think, around the turn of the century. It was found fairly near the road, which is quite old, but the soil has either been filled or turned sometime in the last 20 or so years. I found that at 8" but I found a plastic straw a foot away almost as deep as well as a zinc a little further away at about 6" and they were both about the same depth I was finding 40s and 50s wheats at. So who knows. But if there was on there may be more so I'll hit that site more often. (It's right on my way home if If I take one route.)
 
I most often get my best finds in the last moments of a hunt,on my way back to my truck, in the few moments before dark,or if I say just a couple more digs. Weird.GR
