1861 Fatty Injun and need help on HUGE button

went back to the field where I got my large cent monday and this is the toughest field I have ever hunted. Unreal amounts of iron, you just have to creep so slow thru it to get a non ferrous signal and they are few and far between. 1.5 hour hunt tonight I found a harmonic reed piece, 2 more shotgun shells, couple pieces of lead, 1861 fatty injun, the wheat which is beside the large flat button to show the size. It is HUGE.....front is really corroded and I do not see any markings at all on front or back, any clue to the age or anything about it?

Congrats on that fatty, That's the best looking one I have ever seen dug, AWESOME FIND.

I was told that there's a few good books out on the old buttons. These books have color photo's of the buttons, tell you mfg. histories, how to date them, etc.
Try looking on eBay or Amazon. Like you - I found a bunch of nice old buttons this year - maybe ask for one of these books for Christmas !

HH --- Mark

Sweet 61 fatty! Tough to find them in that nice of condition. Especially in fields where iron is as abundant as the site you are hunting. Nice recovery!!! Ah, those annoying harmonica reeds! Between them, shell casings, accordian reeds and broken overboot buckles, I could fill a coffee can this past month. Let us know if you get any of the crud off the front of that button. It is huge. Good hunt! HH Randy

That is a nice Fatty... I have 14 of them, and none are even close to that condition.

Hey Goes4ever, That is a colonial Tombac button. I'm assuming the color is a dull silver?? Mostly went out of style around the very early 1800's. We find a lot of them in 1790 sites and before. You can tell them by their color and raised hump where the shank is attached. They come in all sizes and if yours is bigger than a quarter, may have been a coat or cloak button. Hope this helps!

Congratulations on that spot Terry. Your dedication is really starting to show. Are you gonna be out marking signals all winter, since it real close to ya? Thanks for the pictures my friend!
