1884 Church Need Some Advice

I finally found something old here in WA and was wondering what you guys thought? I went there for about an hour last sunday and didn't seem to have a ton of targets but looking at the picture there are grave stones right in front and then some off to the left up on the hill and all along the side behind the church as well. Any idea's on where to start and should I be using the biggest coil I have as the targets are not that abundant? I did what I thought was a button but I will post it if I find anything else from there. It's not a button but some kind of clasp for something. Any how any help on settings places to start I'm all years

Just make sure your pattern is fairly open, use the pro coil, and go slow. I would start at the shurch and work my way away from the cemetary portion.

So your saying start at the church and work my way towards the stones? I have the pro coil and the 10x12 SEF I also if I can get it sent out here a WOT coil as well I only have one day a week to hit it so I'm just trying to maximize my time there I talked to the grounds keeper and he have me full run on sundays so I was looking for other peoples help that have hunted these kind of sites

I'd steer clear of the actual headstones...good luck, hope you find good stuff!

I would probably check the entrance way in and out of the church .....and any path that leads to the church .... Remember too that when there are weddings or right after church people congregate right outside the exit to talk ......Check around any big trees where the kids might have played ..... I would probably pick my deepest coil for that area ....Jim

I WOULDN'T even get close to any of the head stones and try to stay around the church.

Your best bet is to invite me to come along and help you hunt that very large area. It's the least I can do for a fellow e-trac'er. Even with the two of us, it will take a couple days to be thorough.

I never implied I was going to detect around the head stones never even crossed my mind till I read that here. But anyway to clear up any confussion I was just looking for any tips like big trees or entry ways those were obvious but there are some not so obvious as well and I was hoping someone could point them out lol if not I will cover and recover the place but like I said I only get sundays off and then it rains a ton here in WA so time is and will be very limited so was looking to maybe get some great tips and cut the learning curve hunting these kind of places.... Thanks for everyone's time posting here I appreciate it and will check it out again when I get off of work.

If you could look into the history of the church, you may find they had them in the lawn of the church grounds like they did around my area. (it may just be a mid-west thing). Best of luck.

I appreciate you getting back. That's the kind of info I am looking for and I am trying to find some history on this place but just started It's all good here and I have a ton to learn from you guys just trying to shorten the time it takes to get there lol

Good info given already but look around and see where they had the picnics at...may be close to some running water. Back in those days folks would go and stay all day.

At the bottom of that sloping hill is there a small stream with a field...maybe some big trees too. Just a thought. Good luck and HH

I will give that a look next time I go for sure. That's something I can do even if it's raining out Thanks for the idea

Before you start to hunt any new site - take few miniutes - stop - look and think ...
Line up angles of the paths that were walked the most - that's where the most things were lost.


Where did the people park their cars / horse & buggies to walk back and forth to the church ?

Hunt the parking area very thoroughly !

Alot of church's held social events and other outdoor get togethers - look around - is there a larger flat area close to the building ?

Always look under big trees - people are drawn to them !

Were there any other out buildings on the grounds in the past ? Pavillions - Outhouses ? Look for old stone or cement remains and hunt those areas.

Most Important - NEVER hunt over or near graves !

Research is alway a very important - talk to any older people that go to the church - look for photo's and other history of this church at the local library or historical society.
Finding an old photo of this church could show you people at an event on the grounds - where old out buildings once stood, etc.

I recently found an old photo of a high school that I hunt that was built in 1910. I found this photo in a family scrap book that was donated to the local library. When I looked closely at the photo I noticed that there used to be a small buildiing approx. 200 ft. behind the school - near the woods line - thats no longer there. I hunted the area where the old building stood the next time I went to the school.
I found a Mercury Dime, two War Nickle's and three Wheat Cents in less than an hour. I never would have hunted this area unless I had seen the old photo !

Mark has it right I would see if there is any old post cards pictures there are old town maps that might shed some light
and glory be to god and may he allow you to find something nice.
