3rd trip to old field site and I got my first coin 1849 LC

ok been hunting this field right by my house, the owner is in his 80's and told me there has never been a house there. Well I told him the 1886 map says different..lol

He gave me permission and first I walked the field and found glass and bricks, good sign. I hunted it first time 2 hours, found a harmonica reed, heel plate, suspender buckle, no coins. Went back again for a couple hours found a boat load of shot gun shells, and scrap pieces of metal, no coins........

went back today for a third time, told myself if I don't get at least one coin this time I am writing this site off my list. This site is the highest iron content field I have personally ever detected. I get 8 to 9 iron hits per swing, so you have to go slower than a snail to even get a non ferrous signal to come thru even in two tone ferrous.

I got a solid screaming 01-45 signal and I looked down and the ground and saw a large green disk sticking half way out of the dirt. I didn't even have to dig, just reached down and plucked it from the dirt.

I am pretty happy as this is my first LC I have found this season. Here is a pic as I found it and also a pic after I cleaned it up.

Very nice! Congrats on your persistence! Lots of people will write off a site, just because they didn't find anything there the first couple times. I've got sites I've been hitting (off and on) for dozens of years. Some hunts yield nothing but trash, while other hunts pay off in coins! If that field was right beside my house, I'd be out there every time I had a half hour to spare! And I'm guessing you'll be out there again yourself, very soon. Congrats again. HH Randy

yep here too, my area wasn't really populated much till 1870-1880's........I have 85 indians this year but it is hard to get anything older than 1860!

Really nice find!! It looks in pretty decent shape! Your not to far from me and the LC I found the back was in great shape but the front was almost unreadable! You had to hold it just right, in the light, to read the date.

A huge congratulations to ya Terry! Glad you got a coin out of that spot!

Congrats on the large cent -

I haven't found a lot of large cents over the years but my favorite was in 2000 and I didn't find it, my son went with me to get permission to hunt the really old farm house on my mail route and while I was talking to the owner my son bends over and picks up a 1846 large cent laying on top of the ground in the cinders by the mans drive.

Turned out to be a really great yard to hunt as it produced 7 seated dimes a really nice 18K wedding band, numerous other silver coins and my oldest large cent I ever found a 1806. Really poor condition.

Those kind of places to hunt are few and far between, most farm yards produced very few coins. Most farmers didn't give their kids money to lose.

Keep hunting, they're out there. Rick

That large cent is in the best condition of any other dug one I've seen. Pretty nice!

I rinsed it with water to see the date, to be sure it wasn't a valuable year before I cleaned it, once I saw it was 1849 a common year. I got more aggressive with cleaning. I do not like peroxide on coppers except wheats because it makes them too dark for my liking so I used an SOS pad that is real fine steel wool, I wet it and rub gently to remove the green crust, constantly rinsing to check the progress, it kept looking better so I kept going till I was happy how it looked, I would never use this method on a valuable coin. But this was a common date and I wanted to improve its looks for my collection, I do not sell anything I find.

Nice! Got my 1st one last Friday, an 1848. Think I know how you felt when you 1st saw it. Congrats!!!!
