6 objects, 4 goodies - Merc, IH, wheat, neat button(?) from last night

After a slump this week with nothing particularly interesting since the '53 Washington quarter on Sunday (that I lost in the house since) except for a few wheats here or there--but mainly the clad, the whole clad, and nothing but the clad--I hit a spot in Cambridge on the way home that I'd stopped at on occasion during the previous year. Never found a whole lot interesting there with my Sov except for a big-a musketball so thought I'd give it a shot with the SE. But it's one of those places you know there just has to have some interesting things hiding in the ground. The one road going by it has been there since the mid-1700s at least (earliest map I have). Didn't have a lot of time so, after digging way too deep for the nail and some hot rocks I decided to just dig more obvious signals and leave the iffier ones for later. Did play around with the Threshold Tone and Gain settings a bit though.

I only found one thing that might predate the 20th century, but it was still happy to have broken the short silver slump. And as few Indians as I've found, that was a definite bonus, even if a quite common date. Anyone know if the one object is a button or something else? Where there was an attachment on the back is broken off so I can't tell what it was by then. Might have been a brooch. (Wondered if there'd been a stone in it at one time. Wish I'd looked closer in the hole but it was dark. Oh, the other two objects I dug were a pulltab and a nail. (Though that doesn't count some hot rocks--seem to be having more problems with them lately--probably comes from digging iffier signals.) The IH was under some roots and it looks like I may have gouged it a bit, although it could be where some copper disease flaked off. The Merc is in pretty nice shape. Full bands on the back (but not full split bands).

Anywhere I find any Old Coins at, I go back. Even though you didn't land a hoard or anything, this site of yours holds potential and with some patterning of the area, you should do very well with finds I feel. The Item in question you have looks like it is the top from a Cuff Link. I won't know for sure unless I see the back. Congrats on a very nice Merc from the early years. Hope you make many more great finds at that site BlackX. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

Hi Rich...

Have you ever checked the digital # when it may be a cursor hugging up tight right corner (higher than any silver) cause if it ID's ok then it will be 31 like iron on my xs...not sure what SE's do......sometimes if Hot Rock is deep it will not give a steady digital # to me.....Hot rocks to me also always have a lump noise at the end of tone......just curious

Thanks, James. Do you think it would have had a stone or was that just the design? I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow.

Yes, they often come in at 0,31. Bob pointed that out to me a while back (along with the popping aspect). But sometimes it seems they drop up and down the right side of the screen too. The popping at the end is a pretty clear indicator but sometimes I have to listen for it since it seems to be one of the background sounds I've learned to tune out most of the time. One of the things I was figuring out was that, for whatever reasons, sometimes good targets (or good targets near hot rocks or iron or ? sometimes do that too. As well as nulling like iron does. (I can't quite figure that one out when there's not iron under the coil.) I'm at the point right now where sometimes with hot rocks, as in iron-edge falsing, I can get a nice tone out of them with a nice tight wiggle. Got a beautiful tone out of one hot rock last night. Guess it's just one of the things I'll have to learn more over time. (Though that's one of the things I'd like a parametric EQ for--to put a peak in that drops off before 31.)

I haven't found one like yours before but I have found lots that have different Designs and Shapes to them. I even found 1 that was a Small Turtle. When you find Cuff Links, the Barber are sure to follow, at least in my past experiences. I will look forward in a pic of the back. Good Luck and HH.

it must be great to hunt sites that had activity in the 1700's. That sure opens up the possibilities of some really old coins. Unfortunately the county in Indiana where I live was Indian territory until 1816 and didn't have much currency in circulation until after 1830. Most early settlers here farmed and trapped . They traded the furs for goods at stores because they couldn't wait on the fur buyers making their yearly trip to this area. The store owners used money from furs to buy more supplies from the east. So until the first real towns were started we had almost no currency being passed in this area. I'll look forward to reading more posts of your finds.
