8 by 6 Butterfly Coil

I have been using the stock coil that came with my MXT pro and like it but it is not good in trashy areas! The question I have is on the 8 by 6 butterfly coil and how good it is in the trashy and mineralized areas. I would also like a coil that gives good depth would the 8 by 6 be best for this or can anyone recommend another coil. I know there is alot of people that prefer different coils but I need some input to get the best bang for my buck. Thanks

The 8X6 is a good coil, especially in mineralized ground but being a DD/SEF style, they do like the bottle caps. For a concentric coil, the 5.3 is hard to beat in less mineralized ground.

I just got the 10" D2 by Whites. I havn't gotten to use it mich since its been SO dry in Mo but what I had seen so far I like it. I have previously hunted out my own yard with the 950 and then I went over it again with the D2 and found an early teens wheat cent that was right next to some foil and trash. I think the 950 had been fooled with the trash there and the D2 picked it out. They both have the same depth but the D2 has DD advantages. It lacks some positive ID ability though and will show penny or higher for some bottle caps. I don't really mind so much because the BC's really need to be dug anyways. Plus, I would rather the coil exagerate a target rather than down grade it and convince me to leave it. I believe the D2 will stay on my machine until I get into so much trash I need to equipt the 5.3 coil.

The 8x6 will have the depth of a 6" coil. DD coils are compared to concentric coils of the same width as far as depth goes, so a 10x12 will have depth of a 10", ect. Its really hard to beat the 5.3 in that size range which is actualy a 6" coil.

The bad thing here is the back yards of most older homes are laden with cinders and it is difficult to pick out signals with the stock coil that came with the machine will the 5.3 work well in these areas?

After you put some more time in with the D2 coil let me know how it performes for you. I think I will try to get 2 more coils for the MXT but not absolutely sure which ones yet I am now leaning towards the 5.3.

Yep, it sure will and if you need more separation yet, the 4X6 is the ultimate. (at the expense of depth loss)

I have stuck it out in heavy hotrocks with the 950 and almost pulled my hair out BUT I was able to finally get a signal that was repeatable in the same spot(tones and ID were all over the place in hotrocks) and it was a Mercury dime at about 3 inches. Good shallow targets are rare but in heavy hotrocks they are still there waiting for the right coil to swing over them. Depth isn't a huge factor in hotrocks, anything that can deal with them will have success since everyone before us left those areas alone for the most part. Hotrocks make me want to excavate the dirt and run it through a dredge to get the goodies.
