99 tones VS 4 tones...

If I remember correctly, I started with everything up to "0" and 48 knocked out. That removes 5 of 29 tones on a 705.

This spring I had a plan to play a round with the 99 tones this year but with the way things turned out with my job I did not have much time to MD this year so I stuck with the 4 tones and some times AM, but on the other hand I get thinking that I do pretty good with 4 tones so if it's not broken then why fix it, lol. I've been using 4 tones for about 8 years now and I feel that if I switch to 99 tones then it will be like starting all over again. Some day I'm going to play a round with the 99 tones but not right now. I'm MDing fields now and if it beeps above iron, I dig it. lol

That is exactly the way I feel. After reading all the input here on the 99 tones I have started using 99 tones and I have been finding coins alright but not sure if I wouldn't have found them using 4 tones. I think those who use 99 tones have a gift to be able to use the 99 tones and be skilled enough to decipher the differences in all those tones and what they are telling you. I will keep using the 99 tones for a while to see if I can become more proficient with them but if not I am back to the 4 tones. It is true that it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks and I am a pretty old dog. IMHO

I am totally a newbie and find this thread really interesting and informative. I was just thinking that after locking onto a target it would be beneficial to try the different tone settings before retrieving.

I read all of this great info here-and I try most of it. What I don't see too much of is people trying/experimenting on a given target and relaying that info. I do this from time to time. If I can figure a way to relate some of this info in an intelligent manner-I'll try to add to this site.

Example- if you're sure that you have dime located-medium depth in a mode that you're familiar with-say 4 tone AM-- why not swithch to 99, 1 tone, Mode 1 etc and then dig for confirmation? I'm not suggesting all targets-just here & there with targets that you're pretty certain about. Hear the change-watch the TID etc.

I read all kinds of in depth -usful info here. See this same subject frequently. I would welcome some threads like this- "you wouldn't believe the difference -this or that change made---before I dug......

I remember one similar with the + / - ground feature and (I believe) a Trime comparison story Digger wrote.

I may have finally turned the corner on using the 99 tones as I have been using them for more than a week this time. I have always gone back to my old reliable 4 tones in the past but so far this has been my longest time spent on 99 tones. I am not sure I am finding any more but for sure I am not finding any less and have found some clad coins in really trashy areas that I may have missed using the 4 tones.

Good to hear! Keep trying the 99 tones and let us know your progress. I find it hard to use 4 tones/notching now that I have been in AM /99 tones.

Excuse me Gentlemen..technical question....most of you that know me know I hunt in whats called "Delta Pitch" on my machine which is "99 tone" on yours...do all Minelab land machines have the 99 tone option?


I have enjoyed reading your 99 tone success on this thread! It certainly gives a lot of audio target info and is very handy...I have hesitated in buying any detector that does NOT have this capability, so I need to know which Minelab models have this available just in case I need a new machine..

I'm sorry. I should have addressed this much earlier.
The answer is "YES", all of Minelab's Adventure and Treasure series detectors (VLF) are multi-tone.
Not all are "99" tone, even though they may have that menu option. With Xterras, there is a tone assigned to each target bin segment, so a 705 (for instance) actually only has 29 tones.
