A BIG first for me! :super:

Last night I threw a giant load of laundry in the triple-loader at the laundromat (washing machine at home blew up recently) and headed out to detect for a while. Drove by the old field/picnic area/now ballfield but it was full up with teams. I remembered that I hadn't yet hit where there used to be a large business next to a pond over 100 years ago with my SE yet, and it was close by, so I headed over there. This site is peppered with iron and modern garbage. And the ground is nasty stuff to dig in. Getting below 4-5 inches is work.

Fired up and, within seconds of the noise cancel finishing, two small spectators appeared in my lowered vision--rugrats! A boy about 7 and a girl about 6, shortly followed by the mother of one of them. The mother wandered off but it was hard to detect for a while with little feet and hands suddenly appearing in my holes, on my coil, etc and continually peppering me with questions. I detected off in the direction I figure a lot of workers would have walked onto the site from but wasn't getting much but modern clad and junk. Though I got one signal that measured about the size of a manhole cover and I'd guess was 2 feet down. I left it there. :) Finally couldn't take it any more of the little hands, feet, and questions, so I picked up my detector and walked off in the opposite direction 50 yards or so and started detecting again. By now I'd also picked up a couple more followers, a cute-as-punch little Asian boy about 2 (had to be one of the cutest kids I've ever seen), his older sister, and their mom. They followed me over not long after but I didn't mind too much since they were very well behaved. Although by now I was starting to feel like the Pied Piper. Not long after dropping the coil at the new spot, I got an interesting tone that was bouncing around between 00-24 and 00-26 (I think) and I remember thinking, "That's an interesting signal. I wonder what that is." The depth meter was reading pretty shallow so I wasn't expecting much but I popped the plug and there, about 4" down and staring at me out of the hole, was this beauty.

I gently lifted it out and didn't rub it at all. This baby was going to be cleaned with nothing but water and a toothbrush.

I think how nasty this site is is what left that lovely lady there for me to find. I suspect someone got their coil over her before and didn't know what was there. There was another piece of garbage off to one side of the hole as well as a big piece of iron somewhere underneath her. The only thing I've found of interest here before was a silver Rosie.

By now, a couple more adults had wondered over. I started detecting again and hit a probable dime signal. Bent down to dig and all of a sudden there were a ton of feet around me. I looked up to see about half a little league team, the grandparents of the nice kids, and some other adults. Gack! I recovered the dime and quickly detected off in the other direction. Thunder and lightening were starting in the distance and the people fairly quickly cleared out. With a wave, the cute little boy was the last to leave. I detected some more but wasn't finding much. I finished off digging a whattheheckisit from about 8" as the rain started to spatter in the dust and lightening and thunder seemed to be all around me. By the time I got to the car 50 feet away it was dark and starting to pour. Drove to pick up my laundry and head home with a good feeling. A wonderful storm crashing all around, Wish You Were Here and then a ZZ Top song on the oldies station, and my first silver half!

Note: I didn't do any of those gouges (on either side) but someone sure did before me. And it would be nice if it wasn't the highest-mintage Walker. But I really don't mind much. I'm very happy to have finally found one!

BlackX-------CONGRATS on that Walker man---and really enjoyed your story how you got her. I'll take a 19-- anything Walker (anyday)!---Their all beauts.------You got another "piece of history" there.---Del

Thanks, Del. They sure are beautiful. I wish the Mint was still using nice bold designs like that. Just heads, almost all in the same proportion, is kind of boring.

BlackX-----I have ALWAYS thought that the Walking Liberty half & the Mercury dime (both designed by Adolph Wineman) are the most beautiful U.S. coins ever made. "Don't make 'em like they used to".-----Del

I remember being at the beach one day and I saw the cutest little oriental kid sitting in the surf, with his caucassion parents, must be adopted and he looked like the Michelin tire guy....If I can find pics I will post it....he had a roll of fat every 2 inches.. he could be the next SoMo wrestler champion..he must have been 1-2 years old....I asked the mom if I could take a picture of the most adorable baby I have ever seen....she said she has heard that more than once and said yes...

Oh and by the way all you had to say was you found a 1947 walker and posted a pic.......geesh.....:poke:

Great post Rich!

Nice silver keeper !!!

I really enjoyed sharing that hunt with you; __ and aren't kids just so great,:)

I know what you mean when you say little hands in the hole, I also had that experience at a beach one day...
You have to be careful digging eh!

Great job Rich... BTW, I could use that one in my Liberty Walking collection......

I guess you can thank all those rugrats making you move to another location.

You just never know what is around the corner.

I found my first half--a modern clad Kennedy--about a month ago. I'll be real happy if I can find halves at that interval. :) (Though I don't expect it since it took me almost 3 years to find my first one.)

Thanks, Neal. I'm still feeling pretty good about it. I 2x2ed it and took it in to work yesterday to show some folks that like to see the things I find. Kept taking it out of my pocket and looking at it all day.

Thanks, GR. I'm hoping there's more there for me to find. I was pretty excited about the possibilities when I initally found that site but after hunting it a few times with only one silver Rosie to show for it, I hadn't been back in a while. I think I'll put it on my regular circuit now and see what else I can turn up. That sure was a good sign that there's more there.

Thanks, George. When did you find your first silver half? What was it?

Thanks, Doug. My GF's granddaughter was a Michelin baby (though she's grown out of it by now). I wish I'd had my camera along to take a picture of the boy almost as much as getting a shot of that Walker staring at me out of the hole. But I suspect by their behavior that that family probably goes down there a lot and, if so, maybe I'll get a chance later. He would just stand there, fairly close but far enough away, with a serious expression on his face, and just watch. But it looked like there was a bit of wonder in his eyes too. I suspect he'll be a bright one when he's older. He seemed to be taking it all in.

What, you just want a pic and no text? :)

Hopefully one of these days I'll get up there to hunt with you and Bob.

Thanks, Bryce. (I'm "doin' a Bryce" on my replies to this one. :poke: :) )

I'm still having a hard time believing you pulled those two Barber halves in one day. Then you went and topped it off with that Morgan! My dad did some coin collecting and I grew up looking at his Morgans, so finding one is one of my long-term goals.

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm not getting my coil over Barbers--my main goal at the moment--or if I haven't learned enough yet to recognize what I'm hearing. I'll get there sooner or later and I have confidence I should hit one fairly soon since my Mercs are back into the '20s now and I've started hitting Indianheads with what approaches regularity. Any advice for speeding up the process? :)

Thanks, Snowy.

Yeah, I love kids--would have had a whole passle of 'em if I could have but I only ended up with two--but those first two rugrats while hunting wore out on me in a hurry. Since I currently use a big knife for my plug cutting, I used that for an excuse to shoo them back when I was cutting. They were right back in a heartbeat though. At least the little girl was trying to be helpful and flip my plugs back over and tamp them down when I was done. She even figured out on her own to stomp it down with her feet.
