A break in the weather permitted a short hunt with the Explorer ll

It was very nice to get out for a hunt. The temp a balmy 53 degrees and damp after the rain. The coil I used today was the stock Slimline 10 inch. This park has very few good signals. The 1951 dime was at a depth of about 7 inches, the Indian Heads were found about a foot apart 7-8 depth strong signal, the two wheat's about 10 inches and iffy targets I have been over this area with my Sovereign GT a dozen times.

especially until you run an explorer over it again...and then again...and then once more for good measure....then it's STILL probably truly not hunted out.
I knew you were going to like the EX2. Keep on poppin' out the oldies...and enjoy the 50 degree temps while you can:cheers:

Bryce, one more warm day according to yahoo weather before a two week cold spell. You are right the Explorer is a great metal detector.Get some over the counter cold medication and rest.

Pretty decent finds for a balmy day's stroll in the park. Those 2 Indians appear in great shape but the wheat's are really toasted but still good finds.

This is why using the Explorer is key in finding the Super Deep Stuff! Don't get me wrong....the Soveriegn GT is a great machine but it won't get the Depth of an Explorer. It will get most of the Coins but for the Ultra Deep Coins 10"+, the Explorer is the way to go. I take it that some of them Coins were masked with Iron so the Soveriegn couldn't get a good enough Signal and ID for you to dig. Keep hitting that spot where you were with the GT. You'll find more Coins yet! Congrats on the Indians and the Silver. Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

James, very good point.I think the Sovereign is one of the best detectors only second to the Explorer. The Explorer out class the Sovereign on depth.I do feel more comfortable with the Sovereign. How effective,as a new inexperience user the Explorer is finding a lot of missed silver left by the Sovereign and other metal detectors.Bottom line the Explorer is a confidence builder that gives a hunter the best chance to find that very deep old coin. Thanks

If an Explorer goes over a piece of Silver, you'll know it because it just Screams! You may like your Soveriegn but put more time in with your Explorer and you soon will realize that it now serves as a Back-Up Detector. You have 2 of the best machines made by Minelab and I wouldn't part with either one. The Soveriegn works great for finding Nickels also and it is Rick(ND's) favorite unit. Hope many more great finds are in your future Ron. Good Luck and HH!

I'm finding coins regularly at an old resort that closed in 1970. all over grown wooded area. I found like 19 wheat pennies, the deepest was 11 inches. all others were in the 5"- 8" range. That was using the 8" bbs coil on my sovereign xs. Many sovereign hunters who claim to be good are not as good as they say they are; many don't use the 550/180 meter which is mistake #1. my meter ID the 11 deep wheaty using the wiggle, I read 550 twice and the tone was repeatable. The explorers are great detectors they give target ID and u have adjust ability on settings.
If I went by tones only on the sovereign I surely would have passed over on many good targets. Let me give you an example. you have silver or clad coin next to a pull tab. The sovereign tone will say its a pull tab due to the overtone but the meter will read in the 520 area with a tight lock on, due to it being a tight lock on, my 550 chart will say its a possible medium gold ring. I dig the target and its a wheatie next to a pull tab! but if I went by tone only the target would not have been dug due to high overtone. Catch my drift. This is just one area where meter less sovereign users are missing targets and the explorers are getting the few goodies left. Sovereign users must use all the tools and the meter is a key TOOL. Why buy an explorer and not use the smartfind, etrac, adjustable iron mask etc. You defeat the purpose of buying an explorer.
So the sovereign is still an awesome detector, only a handful of true skillfully users are out there. Same with the explorer users.
Thanks for listening James
