A Gamble Pays Off.

I had done some research a while back and located an old home site on a map from 1856. The area the house was at is now a wooded area. It is about an hr from my house and I thought there might be a chance I could find it and there might be something left if it had already been detected. I was up for a little adventure anyway. It was a little bit of a gamble and a drive. Turns out..... well worth it.

This was one of my best days out....alot of history there. I will try to clean them up and repost. Thanks for looking Dan

PS. I think those coppers were from a spill or a buried cache. I found them all within 10 ft of each other and it looked like a machine had gone through there at some point.

Very nice research,and terrific finds.
Way to go,Many congrats.

Great finds Dan! Congratulations on the "new" old spot and some nice coins. Dang Merc. kinda looks out of place in that grouping. If you found some of the older coins first I'll bet you were thinking Shield Nickel instead of Buff. and Seated instead of Merc.

Nab Trac, I didn't know what to think actually. The first six digs poduced four coppers. The signals were way off here. A kid with a radioshack could have found half of the coppers, they were very shallow. some of them gave #'s like 12-44 12-42. Normally, a copper comes in at 12-47 or so. One of them I thought was going to be a wheat penny. I didn't think the merc was out of place because it looks like it was logged at some point (mid 1900's) maybe durring the war.
What I was realy hoping for was a Reale.

Really nice finds, way to go with the research as well. Looking forward to seeing more finds.
Semper Fi,

Dan,

I'd drive over 4 hours to find coins/relics like that!!

I bet there's a bust coin just waiting for you to find there. You already had a fantastic first outing!! Not sure you could have done any better than you did!! :please:

Great Finds!! :super:

Sweet finds and I bet there is alot more to be uncovered there!

Thanks guys. Captn SE, I would drive that far too if I knew there were going to be finds. I had no idea before I set out what to expect. I have made longer drives for a whole lot of nothing.....this one paid off. I don't post the days I get skunked. You guys only see my victories, not my defeats. It's all good, Dan

You found the Mother Lode! Man, those are some awesome finds! Great Job!!

"A Gamble Pays Off"--I'd say that's an understatement. Great job on the research--you really did find a terrific spot. Congratulations on all the great finds! Thanks for the story and pictures.

The old 1880's maps are a great way to find old sites to hunt.
I have a set of 1874's maps of my county - approx. ten maps in all - I had the copies made at our county court house for only $.25 cents each - I never leave home without them !
As many others have said before - research is a very important part of our hobby - your great finds are sure proof of that !

ET-Ohio- That is one of the best things about MD'n there are several hobbies within. Being at home on a cold winters day behind the computer can be just like being in the field sometimes. I found these spots on my maps last winter. I ask this question.....which is harder? Finding that old coin, or findining the spot to detect where the old coin is buried? My only regret about detecting is, I wish I started 30 years ago. D

Hey Dan, awesome hunt! you hit the nail on the head with your last post, sometimes the research is just as exciting as the actually find because when you find something good you know your research paid off.
