Went back to my favorite 'pounded' park today with the SEF. I went over to the oldest section of the park that I had hunted last week to finish up the area. Last week I pulled out some deep stuff that I had passed over with the stock coil on my Exp 2. The problem I had, and now I remember it from last year, is this section gave me a ton of interference, and was hard to detect. No wires overhead, so I assume they are under ground. But I did end up with a SLQ before I was chased away. It was about 8-9 inches down, and slightly iffy. I was about to leave and try a new section , when I was approached by someone walking his dog. He asked if i had any luck. We had about a 20 minute chat. Turns out hes a treasure hunter too..but he has been out of the game for a while. Big history buff with alot of info. He knew so much about this park and the surrounding area..it was mind boggling. Real nice guy. So we exchanged numbers and agreed to get together this season hopefully and hit some promising spots. So off I went to a different section of the park. I came upon a section that looked like it had been cleaned up a bit so I decided to try it. It was tough to work because of the uneven ground and debris. There was alot of trash too..Since it looked lower than the rest of the park, I started digging all good hits, even the shallow ones. I usually wont dig unless it reads at least halfway on the depth meter. I'm glad I did!. my first good hit was loud and in the top right corner. only a quarter of the "box" was visible on the screen. So I thought I had a clad quarter. About 3 or 4 inches down, I see a shiny quarter, and a dime. They looked like new clad, till I saw the dime was a merc..sweet start. So I put the probe in the hole again..and it was singing silver. after a few handfulls of dirt, another inch down, another SLQ quarter. None of the SLQ's had dates though..but at least i was having fun! I moved across a path and started sweeping another section randomly. Alot of loud hits, because there are alot of crushed cans in the area. I got a hit that I thought might be a crushed can..but it sounded a little softer..it read maybe 4 inches down..that was the digging factor for me.. I f i hadn't heard that little softness in the sound , i would have kept going. so i started digging. I was rushing, and for some reason , I still thought it would be junk. but I pulled the small plug, and there was that big silver edge..I just missed hitting it...When I cleared the dirt, I had my First Barber Half..1908-O..!!
What a cool coin..Big silver is rare around here..for me its only my 3rd. But my first Barber.. But it was a good day..By the end of the day I had 13 silver, A ton of wheats. Nothing very old , but good stuff. I'm getting lazy with the nickles though, because They don't clean up too well. I had some info from James ND on cleaning them, but i misplaced it. But anyway..enjoy the pics, and thanks for looking..HH all!!
