I am very new to E-Trac and have been studying it like a science project the past few weeks. I have been reading and studying Andy's book (which is great book I must say) every day since it arrived and have learned a lot of stuff. I just keep digging pull tab after pull tab and some occasional foil . I have been running the preset Minelab coin mode mostly. Of course the places that I have been working the last few times can be very trashy. I have been trying to learn the numbers but they bounce around a lot it seems sometimes and I am not that great with the tones. I am sure a lot of this will come with time but I was curious if anyone may have any tips or tricks that may be helpful in determining to dig or not to dig. Thanks in advance
 
If you are using the multi tone function, you have to listen for the highest pitch tones, then look at depth, then the numbers. The numbers can be and will be off due to trash near your target. If you get a high tone in two different directions dig it. TMAN...
 
Listen for repeatable signals and don't be afraid of digging holes to check them. Do 360 degree turns round signals. Open up the FE.
 
While you are learning the numbers. Dig what gives you a repeatable signal. Walk around the target while sweeping. Nickels will bounce allot. Number your looking for is in the 12-13 range. Pennies are in the 12-45 and lower range "will bounce too". Dimes are in the 12-46 and up "they bounce also but give a nice solid tone. Once ou get used to the difference between a broken tone and a bouncing tone it will get better. Also look at what depth your target is. That will tell you if something is old or modern. Depends on how soft your ground is and the sink rate. The ET as well as most ML takes time. I put a solid 30 hours in mine detecting. Digging all repeatable and learning he machine with stock coin program. Sens on auto.

Pull tabs and foil sounds like your going for the gold. If you are you will dig truck loads of trash for a long time before you find it. What the guys posted above is good advice. It can take up to 30 hours of detecting on the stock program and settings before it clicks.

Thanks for all the great advice. I will try these and see how I do. It may just take me some time learning the numbers and tones. I have been running in the coin mode mostly. I have tried running the jewelry pattern a couple of times at the park with not much luck sad to say. Again, thanks for the tips they are very helpful
 
DD, You've probably noticed this. On shallow coins 3" and less the depth meter will go from ground level to 12" and bounce. That was in Andy's book but, though I've read through it 4 times, I still had to find out the hard way. Good repeatable signal but oh that depth meter. I've yet to get any silver or wheats, just 5 memorials so far.

on those shallow targets you will be able to get three beeps, when you run your coil across it. left side of coil middle of coil and the right side of coil.
 
also personal pref. to what tones you use,i like pitch hold,and smooth pitch hold will grab that signal and hold on to it a little longer also slow down!coil should drag on the ground and sweeps should be nice and slow.low and mellow
 
Remarkably I havent had to dig much trash at all, but I have dug some just to make sure that it was indeed trash, just remember where they are hitting on your cursor and dig a few until you are comfortable that your new toy want lie to you and then avoid them.
 
Start by digging as much stuff as you can bear without getting ticked off lol. The best way to learn is to see what the detector is telling you with both good targets and bad. After a while you will be able to recognise lots of different tones and number combinations without having to dig. But once in a while dig something your sure is crap, you might be surprised and it reminds you that you never stop learning. GOOD LUCK! :beers:

I have not really messed with the tones much. I have just left them on what they were from the factory.I don't know enough about them yet so I've been a little scared to mess with them.
 
If you're using the stock discrimination pattern, make sure you latch in silver dollars so you don't miss them. Best of Luck!

I was told before I bought the E-Trac that it comes with a 100 hr. + learning curve - they were right - at approx.100 hrs.- things really started falling into place for me - but I feel like I still have a long way to go to really understand everything the machine's telling me.

I think the way to go is --- keep reading Andy's book & the factory manual over and over - keep reading all the posts in this forum - and keep digging a lot targets !
I write the FE & CON numbers down of targets I dig in a little pocket note book that's always with me in the field - then I look for patterns.
I think its a it's simple formula ... little by little - every time you go hunting you get a little more proficient with the machine !

The big thing for me is right now is trying to read the numbers correct and figuring out the tones. It seems like to me that the numbers bounce all over the place even when I am air testing different items. Of course I am so new(two weeks to be exact) that I don't know if it is user error or detector error. Since I am so new to the E-Trac I just figure it's me.

I just go into the discrimination pattern, move the cursor to the upper right hand corner where it is blacked out and press the Accept/Reject button to open it up.
