Banning detectors

I didn't think it would happen in our county however, I just found out that there will be a meeting on banning metal detectors use on county property next week in our county. Clay County Florida. I have called several people and will attend the meeting.

Do you have any pros on why detecting should be allowed? ( I have several, just want to make sure I am not over looking something)

One "pro" would be: Tell them that most people don't realize this but detectorists clean out an AMAZEING amount of trash in any given area they detect in.--Take that bucket(s) of pulltabs, junk metals, etc. that you have recovered from areas that you have detected in with you to that meeting to show them & drive your point home.----Which brings to mind my friends, we should ALL be saveing the junk we dig up in our hunts in case this ever comes up in our area.--At least it gives us some "ammunition" in this regard.-----I sure hope some others chime in here with some ideas for this gentleman to present, it could happen in our area.---I feel for you man, don't let 'em get by with it!!!------Regards, Del

Rich i don't have any earth shattering revelations to help you out here but i will say this
Post this on as many forums and threads as you can .
Kellco this is your back yard it is time for you and All other detector manufactures to step up
weather you have in the past or not .
The consumer puts the bread on your table and as each county falls so will the next until we are all done .
Thanks Mike G

Im sorry to hear that...I wish all you guys the Best of Luck :) If you take all the junk youve dug and picked off the surface that may help..Also bring up the fact that Its good exercise,Great family activity....And show them how you properly dig a hole.Maybe some pics.Plz keep us posted..And i agree Kellyco may want to be at that meeting,it is in there back yard so to speak..

I n my town/county it is legal but,a couple politicians around here discourage it.In one particular park there is an alderman that lives right by the park.He has called the police on me and a few others LYING about us......saying "They are making a mess" "Some vagrant is laying spread eagle on the ground "''I don't know if he drunk ,on drugs or has a medical problem....All to have the police come out and talk to me.....This Alderman has called the Police on about everyone that he doesn't like or that he dis approves of there conduct even tho it may be legal, and he is on his way out.....Anyway
Anyway.........I have carried Trash in my pouch when hunting in this park....And when this jerk came up to me and tells me I am destroying the park...I tell him to find one spot where I have dug (I was very careful not to leave much of a trace).....He said "You are not contributing to the beautification of this park and can only be doing harm to it "....I just looked at him...Reached in to my bag,,,,and as I was pulling out some junk items I was saying 'If you think -- I -- am doing harm, what do you think the people that are leaving THESE items behind are doing,Are THEY making this park safe for Your Children ? '.........I then pulled out 2 hypo needles,8-10 little crack bags,a razor knife,a rusted pearing knife, and a short rusty 25 caliber magazine
that must have came from a boot Barretta,,(All had been found in this park on different hunts),,,I bent down and laid them on my drop cloth,,and said I also dug these up...Reached in and laid out 7 bullets, some of different caliber ,2 shotgun shell casings, bottle caps ,screw caps,a corkscrew, and a mess of pull tabs.......I said "there was also allot of broken glass out here that could cut a child's foot...But I either buried it in a hole near by that I was digging,or I put it in a trash container so your children or my children can not be hurt by them....He didn't say a word just walked away.
If you can contact the local Detecting clubs in your area .Ask if they would save all their trash for a month .(Tell them what you plan to do with the trash)...(Needles,bullets,knives glass, and anything that could harm a bare foot Keeping these items in a separate box & garbage bag),,,also all the pull tabs, and junk.....Make arrangements to Pick up (At the end of the month with a couple like minded friends, and when you go to that meeting....Say THIS is what harms your parks, and YOUR children....We are just your unpaid janitors for this County........Once they see all that ..It is bound to make a positive impression..(For Metal Detectorists)..When you dump those garbage bags on the table......(.But then again....Allot of these wealthy Yuppie Puppies Think Detectorists and their actions are Tacky and beneath their position in life..........So it may be an exersize in futility with their kind )
Good Luck

that public parks are for the public, set aside for those activities that the public wants to use them for period. Not open to every whim, opinion, and distorted view from every "crack-pot" public official who think they own it. Many officials think you have no right to a weapon, but most feel they have the right to defend themselves. You see where thats gotten them. Maybe we need something live the NRA.:starwars: It has gotten to the point, where you are told to go to work, go home, and stay there till we tell you otherwise. Golfers tear up chunks, soccer players tear the ground, dog walkers leave crap, and you can get bit, tennis players leave balls everywhere, park goers leave trash etc. but we have to be singled out.

Rich,
I sent an email to the commissioners. I have posted this on the FMDAC message board and emailed the chapter president for the Southeast region. I hope that some help comes your way. I hope others will write and support you. I'm rather shocked at the apathy. You essentially said in your first post, "I didn't think it would happen to me." And that's what we all will be faced with in the years to come. Unless we act, detecting on public land will be an old-timers story... like "back in the 60s all we would dig were silver coins" and "in the 80s I got 200 silver coins outta here in one day"... "I remember when I used to be able to metal detect at the local park"

Good luck, I'm trying my best to help. I have not seen this posted on any other message boards, but maybe someone else help out and do that.

I just sent this to the Clay County Commissioners:

Greetings from Ohio,

I recently heard you will be having a meeting to discuss possibly banning metal detecting. Like those in your county who enjoy the hobby of metal detecting, I would be very disappointed if I could no longer detect. May I recommend you consider issuing/selling a permit detectorists must sign. It could contain rules you want to be followed. For example:

Dig horseshoe instead of circular plugs to protect grass
Leave no holes
Dispose of any and all trash found

I personally remove and properly dispose of potentially dangerous items such as glass and other sharp objects. I also take special care to leave the land as I found it.

Please consider this alternative to banning our hobby.

Thank You,
Daniel A. Hudnell

I hope that helps to prevent a ban.

Thank You for those have posted. I appreciate the assistance. Thanks Nick for posting to the FMDAC, they have contacted me to obtain more information. Thank you Daniel for sending an e-mail to the commissioners.

Here's the response I received from Clay County:

Mr. Hudnell if there's an ordinance passed hopefully it will only stop detectors from being used at Historical Sites on the State Registry, Burial Sites or cemeteries.
Sincerely,
Ronnie Robinson

I know, I thought I would pull up some stuff about historical sites and the antiquity laws to show them that they are already in effect.

Please give this your immediate attention. We need to act fast to help out our fellow hobbyist in Clay County Florida. That is a neighboring county to Jacksonville.

As already stated in this thread, Clay County Florida will be discussing a new law to ban metal detecting on all county property. The law actually goes farther and includes such things as Indian relics and fossils. Basically stating that nothing can be removed from county property. The discussion will take place at the County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday Sept. 8. at 2:00 so we have little time.

I sent emails twice to each commissioner and did not receive a reply. My intent in the emails to them was to find out what prompted this law so we new what approach to take but apparently they are not interested in replying to me. I also found that this law was discussed in a committee the first part of August. This just recently came to light when someone noticed it in the back of a newspaper under the

The one paragraph is scary. By reading this, if you drop a ring on the ground, you can't pick it up.
