Bottle Cap VDI's

Yesterday was my first time out to use my new V3. In order to start my learning process, I went to a small local park where I knew it would be a trashy site. My hunch was confirmed when I began digging a lot of bottle caps. On many of the bottle cap VDI's, the range was in what I would consider to a coin indication. Also on the spectragraph, all 3 frequency bars were pretty far to the right when I was over the target.

Other than "digging everything", what are your tips on how best to determine if it's a bottle cap verses a coin? I seemed to have better luck on my VDI readings on my previous machine, an MXT.

I know this is going to be a great machine after I ramp up more on my learning curve.

I was running the unit in the stock "coins & jewelry" mode

david, The best way to tell is to check out the sine wave that is responding strongest. Usually, those things will respond at the 7.5 freq. with consistency. Had a few spots like that so far and aside from all the masking, was able to pull out good targets.
 
Used the V3 at the beach today.
In dry sand and wet salt surf I pushed hard it to see how much it could take without falsing.
I am happy to say it did its job very well.
After recovering several beer bottle caps in the fluffy stuff, I caught on to their signature and had no more problems with them.
Did find several nickels, clad coins, a few deep encrusted pennys, and some trinkets, but no gold or silver today.

I get the feeling that this detector has the flavor a Minelab in a White's box with some really fancy new display features.
The three frequency color real time display is very good and a definite aid.
I have always liker the quality, feel, and balance, of White's detectors and their and factory support gets high marks also.
However, I felt the Minelab Explorer, Sovernign, Excalibur was a better machine on salt water beaches.
In the past I had tried the XLT, DFX, and the Prizm series but felt they were just not up to Minelab in performance.
This new Spectrum V3 might quickly become my tool of choice at the beach.
(for water hunting I still prefer the Excalibur)

Today was a very good start and things will only get better as I learn more and more about what the V3 is telling me and how to fine tune it to my style of hunting. I can think of nothing negative to say about it ... and that is saying a lot!

Thanks for the advice NW. I saved all my dug trash from yesterday so I'm going to do some tests on the various pieces and hopefully will get a better handle on what the machine is telling me.
 
If the Vision has a DD coil these coils love bottlecaps and you're stuck with them unless the Vision has some magical trick to avoid them.

Out of curiosity, what flavor does a Minelab have, that V3 seems to share?
 
I'm still a newbie with the Vision/SpectraV3, but here's what I'm finding regarding bottle caps (crown caps as opposed to aluminum screw caps).
Most of the crown caps hit with a VDI of 82-85, like some coins. But when you pull the trigger to pinpoint, if it's a coin, the green bar (2.5 kHz) will be the longest/strongest. If it's a cap either the blue or the red bar will be the longest. Seems to work so far, at least on the shallow caps, not sure yet on deeper, more rusted caps.

In addition to what was replied, there is a bottle cap rejection - off "0" to 20 "Max" - running max can cause some problems with good stuff depending on soil conditions. So if some is used, a minimal setting if any should be best, just to start some sputter in the audio.

The corona beer caps give me the biggest hit at the beach :-(

The bottle caps on analyze mode will peak the 22.5 frequency a coin will peak the 2.5. Also the bottle caps or iron in general will have a tiny red bar on the right side of the search screen even though your getting high vdi numbers. Its probably not 100% but it should help.
 
Same Issue with my Sovereign GT and the DD coil, it loves Bottle caps and gives that Dig me sound and the V3 with the DD coil is the same way. even on the steel caps ?. I never had this problem with my DFX and Bigfoot unless it was a Aluminum Medium size Cap would give a Dig me sound.
 
I have to agree with jer4004. Bottle caps VDI at 83 like a quarter but run up to 91 or 92. The main screen will show three green bars about 1/4" wide. the last 1/32" (the right side of it) is in red on one or two of these green bars. I started with BCR at 0 and moved it up a point or two each time I dug one. At 15 I gave up. I would still find caps and I was afraid coins would start to break up. This detector is like a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. It is going to take alot of trial and error, alot of time and patience. If we share discoveries and opinions, maybe next spring we will all be able to hit the ground running.
 
I noticed when we were hunting Saturday Dave that the bottle caps and screw caps that were abundant there, were much louder than a coin in pinpoint mode. I would know when the target was a BC from the pinpoint audio and Analyze screen, (red on top). I don't trust the V 100% yet on everything so I dug them anyway, but the ground was really soft and they just popped out of the ground. When the ground gets harder, I will trust the display more and dig less trash.

Low-Boy, this is for you and also my first post here.
On your question about the V3 having an edge....
Had the V3 for 10 days now...went to a park today and hit a VDI of 75....in the analyze mode the 22.5kHz (blue) read the strongest...dug a bottle top.
Hit another 75 but the 2.5kHz or green read strongest....dug a dime....went on to confidently dig 3 more dimes.
Just for giggles dug a 75 VDI'er that read strong in the 22.5khz.sure enough a bottle cap. It sure felt good.

Isn't a swallower target also louder in pinpoint mode? I have been digging everything also. I figure it is the only way to confirm my suspicions of what the target is. I haven't been checking the analyze screen 100% of the time because I have found that alot of promising looking screens turn out to be trash. The blue and red lines often are so tight it is hard for me to see the difference. I'm also afraid that by only digging only good VDI's, with good graphs
I will miss alot of good stuff.
