Brand New Excalibur II 1000 please help

Snagglepuss

New member
I just bought a brand new Excalibur II 1000 before the price increase well i charged the battery for 20 hours and it warmed up to 50 here in Michigan so i took it out side in the yard to test and i think i have a problem when i turn it on and adjust the threshold everything sounds normal than if i go over a bobbie pin it nulls out but when i move off the iron the threshold is a real low pitch buzz and wont change back to normal till i go over a good target then the threshhold goes to normal pitch just like when the detector is first turned on.I tried all different sensitivity settings with no change.Do i have a problem as I'm new to this machine I'm going to post in several forums to try to get the most response before i call minlab so please don't get upset if you see this post in another forum thanks in advance for all the responses Darren Holz

That buzz is normal and happens as you say when you go over iron or steel. That is one reason why I love hunting mostly in pin point (all metal).

There is nothing wrong with your Excalibur. It will take a while to get used to it but once you do, you will be happy with all the amazing things you can find with that awesome machine.

Thanks i was just freaking out after hearing the problems with the excaliburs thanks for all the replies take care Darren Holz

Sounds like your machine is working like it is supposed too. Congratulations to you for getting yourself in my opinion the best machine out there. That threshold changing is a combination of ground balancing and picking the right frequiencies for the environment you are hunting in. A slight adjustment in the sensitivity will calm down your threshold also. Just a little at a time. Coil swing speed is very important also. Practice and learn that Excal and you will be greatly rewarded. HH :minelab:

You will notice that whatever target you go over , the pitch of that threshold will follow the pitch of the target ....For example .....Take a nail and place it on the ground .....About 2 ft away place a Quarter .......Hit the nail , and listen to the threshold .....Then go over and hit the Quarter and listen to the threshold ........When hitting the nail it should drop down low just as the pitch of the nail is a low pitch ......After you hit the Quarter , the threshold should jump back up to a higher pitch .....It's normal ..... .....Leave your Sensitivity in "Auto " until you get use to your machine , and remember that turning your Sensitivity knob all the way CLOCKWISE , is when the sensitivity is in it's LOWEST point , and all the way COUNTER CLOCKWISE is "AUTO" ....Just off of the click from Auto, turning clockwise , is FULL SENSITIVITY ..... This can be tricky at first to new users ....You will soon get use to it ... .Good Luck with your machine.....Jim

Hi. S...Puss. I to just bought a new one.. My old one got stolen at Tenerife this X mas

Take a look in the manual.. Page 21 and 29.

Have a nice day... Jens.

My question was the same as yours. I know people talk about the strange sounds the excal makes, but I don't think I've ever heard or read about these particular sounds. Just got my excal II on 2/24/2011. Charged it and took it to the beach today, 2/25/2011. The sand is still froze and in the upper 20's here in Michigan. Had to try it and found three pennies, a bottle cap, and a tent stake. Not bad considering I could only use it for about 15 minutes. I thought it was because of the cold, a loose wire, or a bad machine. Glad to hear someone else was wondering the same thing. I know I'm going to like this machine and can't wait for the sand to thaw!!!!! Happy Hunting!!

I also don't like the change in threshold pitch after hitting iron with my GT, which is simular to the Excal. I use a pair of rubber shoes on the beach that I have glued a nickel to the inside of. When the pitch changes after iron I just swing the coil near my shoe and that drops it back. JMHO

I like the nickel idea, but for a different reason. A nickle sounds alot like gold on my excal and when I make an adjustment or detect a different surface it is always in the back of my mind if I am "hitting the gold".
