Clean my best etrac find yet?

New member
I have been hunting with the etrac maybe a month - just out in my yard, and maybe creeping into the neighbors just a little bit. Anyway today I found an 1858 seated liberty half dollar at about 4" next to a big rock separating the yards. Some dude probably sat on the rock once upon a time and lost it. Crisp clear high fluty signal screeming DIG ME UP. There was no iffy about this signal. Needless to say as a newbie I was very excited. The coin is in great shape. Liberty perfectly visibile on the sash, no mint mark (made in philly). It does have some black discoloration on it - and it could look a lot better if I cleaned it up - but I am afraid to. Anyone know any safe ways to clean it up or make it llok better. (Sorry - I know this type of question has problably been asked to death). Any feedback would be appreciated.

i know - only have a blackberry pic which is not good quality. getting a new camera tomorrow and will post pic.

Great Find !!!

GREAT FIND! Congrats. Finding one of those is on my wish list. I came across this very good site for cleaning coins but, as the site suggests, take caution on some cleaning methods. No picture (I hope to see one soon) but your description suggests much detail. If not too black you may be better off not cleaning it. Many coins are actually more valuable that way. If you decide you must clean it up then this site has many ways to do it. But start with the least abrasive way first. Maybe just a light rub with petroleum jelly might work for you. Hope this helps

We don't mind "dirty" coins. Get a picture of it before you clean it anyway. Can't wait to see that coin. Congratulations!!!! Awesome find!!!
