Coil Cover?

I just now realized that the e-trac has a coil cover. Is it removable and should it always be on or does it matter? Does it affect performance at all when it is on. I am planning on leaving it on but I was curious about its use.
 
I just popped it off as I noticed it was not permanently attached and there was so much dirt, dried grass and pieces of leaves on both the bottom of the coil and inside the cover it was unbelievable as I've only had it for over a month now. I gave it a good cleaning and snapped the cover back on. I feel better just knowing that its clean and the way its supposed to be. I remember seeing a post earlier when someone mentioned to always keep the coil clean. Now I know what they meant.
 
That might be my post LOL.
Yes,a lot of stuff can get trapped in there and even draw magnetism to tiny particles.
I try to clean mine about once a month!
