Coil height question

PharmSearcher

New member
Hey guys, I have been following this forum for a few weeks and I love it! Thank you all for your input, your love for the hobby, and your love for Garrett products! My question is about coil height. I have read in Garrett's books and on this forum to keep the coil 1-2 inches off the ground while detecting. I have never done this. I have always kept mine touching the grass as I go. I have always believed in my mind that I would be loosing depth if I held it higher. So my question is, what is the purpose if keeping it off the ground so high? And what are the negative aspects of keeping it on the ground? Thank you in advance for your responses!

Jeff

Jeff - Even if you're touching the grass, you're still probably an inch above the actual ground. Unless you're detecting on plain dirt, the grass, weeds or whatever is going to keep your coil an inch or so above the ground.

As long as you're using a coil cover, I wouldn't worry about sweeping too close to the ground.

Good luck to you!

I'll scrub the coil on the grass unless it causes problems. I have had some machines where I scrubbed the coil and got false signals, so that's where I would raise just enough to minimize the false signals - otherwise I scrub it.

remark on a coil cover;
i wonder why it's not standard on a coil;
why selling something fragile that you have to protect yourself..

Well, the reason why they make coil covers is because eventually, with alot of use, the bottom of a coil will "wear out" and it's alot cheaper to replace a coil cover than it is to replace a search coil. They really do lengthen the lifespan of your search coil.

No they take a beating all garretts coils , i have never used one since i first got my tector ..if your scrubbing on rocks or in water all the time them get one , Or go to a ford dealer or chevey have them dip it in Bed liner , i did it with my 9x12 coil works great no falseing , no lose or depth , dont interfer with the tector and the cost was $23 bucks . and if your in sand it wound pick up any, like coil cover sand will build up in it ....so thats my 2 cents... with the depth thing just sweep till your are just brushing the grass its about 1in . you will be find or go out bury a coin and test ..best of luck

Garrett has always been a detector that should be kept 1-2" above the ground. You will also find it gives more false signals close to the ground and is the cause of the slams on the Ace. O the other hand, it has no trouble getting the required depth at this slight height adjustment. By false signals, I mean by being overreactive to trash and metal objects.
