Coils for the beach

I am thinking of getting a larger coil and was wondering who uses a larger coil on the beach to cover more shore faster? The beach i hunt has very little trash and i don't really need more depth just cover more ground to find rings and coins. Any suggestions?

I think you should stay with the Pro coil unless you have some reason to think you need to go really deep, like for relics or maybe you're hunting a beach where other people don't detect.

If you're on the dry sand and I assume you are, i'd think the Vaquero and a 3x18 would be killer. If you're in the wet sand or water the LS might be better than a bigger coil for the ET.

I was talking to someone after my last beach trip. I commented on all the people I saw walking fast with the coil 6" above the sand. I was looking at it from an inland hunters perspective. I don't remember who it was but he told me that there was a guy like that in his circle of friends... swinging too fast and with the coil too high at the beach BUT... he also said that this guy finds more rings and watches than anyone else. After thinking about it, well.. it makes sense. If a beach is hunted regularly there isn't going to be a lot of inbetween targets. Either really deep or shallow so, most good good jewelry (big rings and watches) will be recently lost and more shallow so moving along, covering a lot of ground is a good idea if it is a popular beach where good targets are lost and there are regular hunters... i'd be thinking about that 3x18...

Its funny you mention that Julien, I saw a guy at coney island beach doing just that and I thought he was nuts. But what you say does make sense. I guess it also depends on how much time you have to swing your coil.

Just stay with the stock coil. If you are trying to get a lot more depth then buy a PI machine.

Yesterday I went to Galveston/Stewart beach with my Vaquero and the stock coil, I could not get the detector to ground balance at all, not even close, way positive. I tried all the usual things like decreasing sensitivity to 1, turning up and down the discriminate, nothing worked so I left empty handed. If someone knows the secret to getting the Vaquero to like wet beach sand please let us know. Thanks

Some detectors can not handle wet salt sand.
The Vaquero should be excellent in the dry stuff.

There are several big coils that come to mind ...
The SEF, the WOT, and the SunRay S-12.
Any of these would be good for covering a lot of ground at the beach.
Turn the sensitivity down ... but be aware you are going to pass over the small stuff.

The fella that recovers the most at the beach is more than likely the fella that spends the most time there searching.
Dont do the fast walk or the wild swing ... cover a lot of sand with a big coil ... but do it correctly and you will get your share.

Without doubt the stock PRO coil that come with the Etrac is pretty good. It's light, stable, accurate and it's so easy to swing.

If I ever want to achieve more ground cover on a beach, then I use the Coiltek 15" WOT. I also use and prefer the: 10 x 14
