Compared E-Trac vs SE...then Pro coil vs 10 x 12 SEF coil. Hmmmmm:surprised:

Well I went back to the pounded sandy area at the park I've been hitting the last couple of outings.
This time though I wanted to do some side by side testing of the pro coil and the 10 X 12 SEF coil on the E-Trac.

As most of you know I love the 10 x 12 SEF coil on my SE...but was curious to see what it would do for me on the E-Trac.

I went back through the sand pit with the 10 x 12...and after 3 TEDIOUS hours was able to flag 3 targets that I felt could be coins.

Now keep in mind that I was just here a few days ago and pounded the snot out of this 20' x 20' area with the pro coil on the E-Trac....and found 5 wheaties and the 11" deep silver quarter

I'm truthfully not surprised at finding 3 additional targets with the 10 x 12 that I apparantly missed with the pro coil...but I needed to see why I missed them.

I popped the pro coil on and headed to the 3 flagged targets. Over 2 of the 3 targets...the pro coil did not give me a "dig me" signal. In fact I didn't get much of a good signal at all. If those two targets weren't marked and flagged...I doubt I would have dug them.

The third target I did get a decent signal on with the pro coil ...so I flat out just missed it the other day. MY fault on the one...but not the other two. :)

Now out of curisoty I repeated this exact process with the SE w/ same coil combos...and the results were identical. The SE with SEF coil was able to hit all 3 targets...but the SE with pro coil would only hit one of the 3. Hmmmm.

Okay...now it was time to dig and see what the 3 flagged targets were.

First...the target that the pro coil was able to hit like the 10 x 12 SEF did. It ended up being a wheatie tipped a little at the 8" level.

Second...the flagged target the 10 x 12 hit that the pro coil didn't hit well. It ended up being a wheatie at 10" next to a small piece of aliminum crap.

Third..the other flagged target that the 10 x 12 hit that the pro coil didn't hit well. It ended up being a 1923 merc at 9" deep.. and pretty much on edge.:super:

Pretty much found out the same results with the E-Trac that I did with my SE. I like the 10 x 12 coil over the pro coil.

It just works better for me at my sites and the settings I run. I'm not saying you fellers' would have the same results...in fact your results might be completely different than mine. I know the results I got though.... it's happened on two different machines....and I wanted to share the results.

It is what it is for me...and I'm being as honest as I can.

All of this being said...I still feel the pro coil is MUCH better on Darrel's E-Trac than it was on my SE. It is very smooth on the E-Trac...almost weightless....and I will be putting some use on it too.

thanks for that side by side comp.
im about to get a sef but have been scratching my head as to if i really would see a dif.
most of my places are filled with fill dirt so im finding things at the edge of detection with the pro coil. i need about 2 more inches of depth to hit down past the fill dirt and still have ok sounding targets

Hey buddy you're welcome.
No way I get 2" more depth with the SEF coil over the pro coil though...and I'm not saying I do.
I do feel it punches down a little further though...or if not...that it definitely gives me a little better sound to let my ears interperet. I don't really know how to explain it...but I have had the same results on both machines...actually 3 machines...cause' my EX2 does better with it too.

Could be my soil here in IL...could be my sites....not sure....but my results are what they are.

The pro coil is an excellent coil...but for some reason the 10 x 12 SEF coil just works better for me. May not do squat for others on the E-Trac...but it does for me.

Take care

Well, are you telling me I have to go and buy another coil, please tell me it isn't so. I got a 4.5X 7 because of you and sold it, I got 6X8 because of you and sold it, I got a 6" excelerator because of you and sold it (that one I should have kept), Maybe its my settings that don't click with the Excelerator coils, so could you tell me what settings you are using on the E-Trac. I loved my pro coil but now as I look at her from across the room, am I about to put her through another separation, she can't take it any more. No, I won't look back anymore, so what if I leave a few coins on edge, I have to leave something for the next generation to find, I have grandkids to think about. Hey look grandpa you missed one here. Happy Trails 2 U...

i may have to move up a size to get the 2 inches but i sure dont want the weight it adds.
but i need the depth for the fill dirt that is put in every darn yard in this area.
well i will figure it out in a few days as to what i want.
but thanks again.
oh yea most of my old coins are being found at the 10 - 13 inch range and let me say i do dig some sorry sounding peeps to get them that deep.

Very interesting. Love comparisons like that. How does the weight compare with these coils? Any significant extra weight with the 10x12 ?

Thanks, and keep on diggin'

I'm not telling you to buy anything. I'm also not telling you to get rid of the pro coil....it's a great coil. I am only telling you the results I had.

As for my E-Trac settings.....bone stock coin program. All I did was bump up my gain...and run manual sensitivity. I just can't get any depth running semi auto with the E-trac.

I absolutely ignore the screen...the numbers...the sensitivity bars (if in semi)...and hunt strictly by sound alone. I usually only glance at the depth meter...depending what the signal sounds like.

Brother...my hat's off to you finding coins at 13". The deepest I have ever found any coin is 12"..and that was a Morgan dollar. I have found a few 11" silver dimes and wheaties...but never a 13" deep coin. That's awesome.

:yo:Hail to the KING!!!:yo:

Thanks Bryce for this comparison. I am glad there is someone like you who can do this & give us unbiased reviews, you take alot of the guesswork out of my purchase decisions. Kinda like when I buy toys for my kids at amazon at Christmas, I don't look at the manufacturers review, I look at the users review & make my decision from their.

Frankly, I think I would get similar results in New Jersey dirt & you do in Illinois. I don't believe you could do any more with your comparisons than what you did above.

Thanks For Keeping It Real:thumbup:

Good Info Bryce and a very nice comparison on the coils and the Minelabs.

Thanks for the kind words Don but I'm no "King". I'm just a feller' who loves to hunt and enjoy the hobby to the fullest.
What you said means a lot to me.

It's hard to say how a person will actually like a coil until they try it out at their sites... with their settings...and in their soil.

All I can do is tell them exactly how a coil performs for me..and be 100% honest and unbiased when I do.

Take care

thanks bcoop:)

It was something I needed to do for myself.

As long as I have access to Darrell's E-Trac I figured I might as well put it through the paces.

I do like the E-Trac and am glad I am able to use both it and my Explorers.

Bryce,

It's nice to see an objective, scientifically-based field test between the two coil/machine combinations. That's the ONLY way to do it. You have any theories on why the SEF performed better in this situation? - Jim

but I'll keep 'em to myself. I don't want people to think I'm slamming the pro coil because I'm not. I have found some nice and DEEP coins with it....and it's a GREAT coil

I just know what I found out from putting a few 100 hours or so on the SEF coil before it was even available for people to buy...and at a time when everyone else was raving about the pro coil.

The SEF coil didn't just perform better in "this situation". To be 100% honest...that's exactly why I sold my pro coil...because it happened quite often....and has continued to over the last couple of years.

It might be what I've trained my ears to hear...my soil conditions....my site conditions....the settings I use...etc. Fact of the matter is though...that it performs well for me or I wouldn't be using it....and neither would my buddies who hunt with me.

Take care Jim.

I would think the shape alone should help it separate better than a round coil while getting better depth as it is about 12" long and the Pro coil is under 10-1/2" long. Also have to wonder about the extra weight being more or heavier windings that might effect performance???

Your depth / signal comparison is straightforward. How do you think the SEF compares with the Pro in trashy areas? I ask because you often mention that a lot of your park hunting occurs in spots where there is very little surface trash and only scattered "fringe deepies" remaining.

Jim

13 is rare. thats no grass just flat bare dirt thats wet with my sens maxed out to 30. the common coin is 9 to maybe 11. in my dirt.

Thanks for the comparison Bryce. I use 8x6 and 15x12 SEF. They both have their uses and work quite well for them. I did have the 12x10 but sold it because the Pro coil seemed to separate trash from the good stuff a little better and no noticeable depth advantage! But that's just me! Again, thanks for taking the time and effort to help us all out!
