CTX auto sensitivity levels?

Hi all. I was out with the CTX and the Etrac tonight comparing signals. I noticed that in auto +3, my Etrac was at level 19. At auto +3, my CTX was at 10. I have noticed that my CTX always runs at a very low auto +3 sensitivity level. I have also noticed that I haven't been getting signals that are deeper than 5-6". I am guessing that is because it is running at such a low auto +3 level. I had it at 3 different sites that are miles apart, and it never got above level 14. Is anyone else having that happen?

The other thing I have noticed is that when I pinpoint a coin, the meter says 4-5" and it is only about 1-2" down. Is anyone else experiencing this?

1. Make sure you noise cancel
2. With auto sens, give the CTX time to read the ground, pump the coil up and down from the ground to speed up the process
3. In pinpointing make sure the coil is touching the bare ground for accurate reading, and that you are directly over the target.
 
It sounds like a coil problem to me. If you are using a coil cover, make sure it is clean. Do you have access to another coil to try?

Also, as Nolan mentioned, make sure that the center of the coil is directly over the target when pinpointing. The manual explains how to do this, but IMO not very well. You might already be doing this, but just in case... When pinpointing with the CTX, especially with the 11" and larger coils, move the coil so that the outer ring is close to but not over the target, press the trigger, pass the coil completely over and past the target, while still pressing the trigger, pass the coil completely back over and past the target in the opposite direction, then as you bring the coil back over the target, you will notice that the "tone" is very narrow, allowing you to place the center of the coil directly over the target.
When I first started using the CTX, I also thought that the depth meter was way off, but have since found it to be very accurate on coin size targets.

Good points but if he has pinpoint lock on, he does not need to continue pressing the trigger!
 
Thanks for the tips

I did the Noise Cancel Several times and the auto sens. level is still too low for my liking. I think that is why I can't get any depth!!!!

I will try those pinpointing tips too.

I don't have access to another coil :(
 
Jake, what are you getting in air tests for depth capabilities? Do you have any out of the ordinary electronics on you? I would recommend checking under the coil cover for anything lodged up in there.. Perhaps there is another CTX user in your area to compare with?
 
Do you have the machine set in auto or manuel ground balance?
 
Check a couple of things: Do like the others have said, clean the coil, and cover. If you are in a high mineral area make sure you have it either "Ground balance Enabled' or 'not Enabled.' If you have it 'enabled' then do the manual ground balance. I'm not all that sure the 'pumping the coil' has anything to do with Noise cancelling as it is not dealing with anything in the ground but with EMI in the air. But, heck if it works and helps, then do it. I never have but I also do not do a ground balance, I just let the machine do its thing. Now, if you don't think you are getting any depth with the machine then do a test bed with it to see. Get yourself some paint sticks, hot/super glue a couple of targets to the end, mark them in one or two inch increments and bury them in the sand. Then go over them with auto and manual sensitivity. I seem to believe that in iron and other metal infested areas the auto sensitivity just doesn't give me any depth also. I tend to run in manual as high as I can stand it, 22-28 and I get the depth I want.
 
I went out again today in Auto +3 and it was hitting 20-24, so I guess everything is Ok now.
