What I've seen happen during competition hunts for silver is that someone gets a silver dime hit, they go to dig it, then in the process of digging it the dime falls deeper and/or gets jammed up vertical on the side of the hole. Resweep the hole and plug and the coin is "lost" if you don't have a good probe to poke around and find it.
I can see how this can happen with the Explorer (without an X-1 probe) which is more difficult to pinpoint with than say an XLT.
