Did you ever find??????

Seems I ask this question a couple of years ago.....I't's time again. Except for the couple in San Francisco, has anyone out there ever found any thing RARE? Like; a Rolex, or an Eagle or Double Eagle, a Silver Dollar, a 1909 SVDB, a super ring, a really BIG nugget....etc.

My best was at Reedley Beach, many years ago, I was detecting in the deep beach sand, my detector (a Judge ll) went really wild (you know like a aluminum can). I almost didn't dig it, but I did. There before my eyes, was a Canon SLR Camera In nice shape, too! How did someone loose something like that? I turned it in to the local P.D. It was never claimed and I took it home and enjoyed it for a long time. Now I don't know if this counts, but once while driving up a dirt road that bordered a creek, up in the mountains, I came across a bunch of young ladies "skinny dipping" in a large pond. Now there's something that'll make your eyes pop out. No I didn't stop, by then I was super happy with my new cutie-pie wife. I remember having my Judge ll with me so maybe it does count!

In the 1980's I found the only silver dollar I ever found in the salt water and it was so badly corroded I couldn't tell what year it was.

I think it is a "Liberty:" minting and after cleaning it some-what I saved it as one of my "best" finds.

I found many silver halves back then to and on one occasion two nearly in the same hole!!

Recently I seem to find only rarely a silver quarter and more often dimes.

For me, nothing too great. But rarest 2 coins ever for me was a 1858 flying eagle penny, and a 1804 U.S. half penny.Not the most valuable of the coins I have found though.
I have found a 1916 NO D merc and a 1909 vdb wheat, no S.

In 38 years of detecting, I have never really hit the big one. Whatever, that may be. I have found a number of decent gold rings over the years. My best being a 14k channel cut with 9 diamonds. I sold in back in the 90's for $3700.00. Like everyone in this great hobby, I have boxes and cans of stuff I've found and saved over the years and I kind of when I think about our three sons going through and wondering what the h**l all this stuff is and does it have any value, when I am gone. The biggest thing for me is the many years of pleasure this hobby has given me. HH jim tn

Wow on the ring jim tn. What kind of area did you find it (beach, kiddie park, vacant lot) ??? Any particulars about the find? Just curious...

Back in the late 1970's with a Garrett Master Hunter VLF/TR.
Blue book at the time was $100.00, too bad it had green patina. It was considered a cull, filler material...

I found a 1876 IH penny at a shallow depth of only a couple of inches. I just got my Sovereign GT then and was not paying a lot of attention to the sounds...just trying to figure out how to pin point witth it and out popped the IH penny. Imagine the pleasant surprise I got as I saw the Indian. Now Imagine my anguish as I saw the scratch I left on it with my probe.

A few silver dollars in 2 close spots years ago. Mid 80s. Haven't found anymore since, but that really got me going back then. Finding silver dimes and quarters was more common then too.
No gold coins yet, but back then I was taking a neighbor noob along with me letting him use one of my detectors. I had bought my 1st brand new detector so I was letting him the one I was using prior. On our 1st hunt together he found 2 rings, both nice. I was standing there talking him using the detector and he plucked them 2 within 15 minutes or so apart. I didn't find any. And of course a little clad and the usual junk.
After we hunted together a few weeks, he found a quarter eagle. It was only a couple yards from where I had detected earlier. I had just hunted along that wall but didn't go all the way down to the very end. He hunted down along the end and found it between a couple small bushes just a coupe feet from the wall. Believe it not, about a week later he found another one I just couldn't believe his luck.
The next few months or so that we hunted together though, he didn't find much of value. Clad and a few silver quarters & dimes. So he kicked my butt with that beginners luck.
Anyway he was in the hospital for long stay and during that time I have moved since. Last I heard he didn't continue detecting. He went along as we were neighbors, I had extra detectors, and was willing to take him along. I guess it was just to go along with me for something to do. What was strange back then was when I had bought my first brand detectors, I told him he could have one of my previous used detectors. He never wanted to have one. Just to go with me for company and see what detecting is all about.
When he found those rings and gold coins, we was calm and just says things like "that was cool, kind of neat". He found them but I was the one that nearly released a load in my pants.
I been doing this coming 30 years and still haven't found a gold coin. But I have a few silver dollars which the fellas I hunt with have never found. Some day I hope.

Both me an my dad have been digging an detecting for many years have made 100s of good finds form rare tokens ,,coins ,a few gold coins hunting an dog tax licenses ,old bottles too.

I found the ring beside a walking trail in a city park. I was swinging a Fisher a cz6 at the time and the ring came from a depth of about 2." After finding out the ring had some decent value, I ran a couple of ads in the lost and found section of the local newspaper. All, to no avail. A few months later, I sold it. HH jim tn

The most valuable coin I ever found was a 1867 IH penny in EF condition. Yes I know,,, EF???? It can be done out of the ground. I had a local coin shop grade it without any info, and he agreed with what I thought,, EF.
Red booked in 2003 at $160.00.

Not bad for a penny.LOL

You would think by looking at it , that it was in a coin holder for the last 150 plus years.Truely amazing.

i never found anything real valuable yet, but did dig a 1914 D penny and a 1895 O barber dime a few years ago. still looking for that gold coin or silver dollar after almost 30 years of detecting, but they could be in the next plug i cut..............roger

Just a few days ago, I made one of my best (valuable) finds. It's a 22 inch, 18k, 18gr. gold chain. It was about four inches down in the park that I've been hunting for the past season. Just the scrap gold value (two days ago) was $515 Canadian!

I found a wallet of an illegal alien from Africa with lots of photos and a 100 dlls bill. The wallet had a bronze button and my ace picked it up under grass that was under water. The bill, to my luck, was rolled in plastic so it was intact.

I'm sure the person who lost it would appreciate the wallet being returned, I hope you did the right thing. I know that sometimes it is impossible to find the owner, but should be turned into Police dept. lost and found. after a period of time you can recieve the money.

larry, great picture! there are still many good finds to be made out there with a little persistance and a lotta luck. thanks for posting that picture....it makes it a little easier to dig all that trash looking for those good finds.......roger
