Dug My First - Standing Liberty Quarter !

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
Went hunting at 150 year old abandoned church and an older Elementary School yesterday.

Got my all time first SLQ and three Wheat Cents dated 1927 - 1942 and 1948 at the church and dug ( 21 ) clad coins near the baseball field at the school.
The date is worn off on the SLQ - seems to happen to a lot of these older "Pedestal" type SLQ's. I did read that this style of Quarter was only minted from 1917 to 1924.

All in all a great time - one old silver coin can sure make your day !

Good luck to all ! --- Mark

Very nice and very rare at public sites now days.Several are found in private yards and I am just about to the point of ringing door bells at some of the older homes around my area. After all a few rejections would not be the end of the world and a yes could mean some great finds:thumbup:

Congrats on the SLQ. I too have found them difficult to find on a regular basis in the areas that I hunt. I've only found a small number of them over the years. Good luck finding #2.

Hey Ohio,
How deep did that lady come from? Did you know it was gonna be a quarter before you resurected her? I love that moment of knowing there is a good chance a silver coin is going to be brought up from the depths of the dark and then seeing its shineing silver poken out. Thats fun. thanks for sharin.

good luck on some more,
utahshovelhead.

Great find. They are hard to find.
Seems as thou getting permission to hunt yards is the best chance at silver.
Last year I found one in a spill beside a driveway. Houses don't have to be all that old to have seen lots of people getting in and outa cars and sitting in the back lawn. Silver coins stopped being minted in 1964 for the most part. Most houses have their share of silver in the lawns.
Thanks for posting and I hope your'e next one has a date.

nice coin!!!!!!!! greetz ad

This SLQ was behind the gravel parking area at the church - where it looks like they graded the dirt for a new swing set - maybe a few years ago.
When they graded this area - they must have brought this old coin closer the the surface - because it was only 3" or 4" down.

You'll never forget that find!!

Actually, SLQ's were minted from 1916 to 1930, but I think I know what you're referring to with your stated dates, in that the post '24 SLQ's had their dates recessed into the step to protect them from abnormal wear.

Congrats again!!
