E-Trac finds something 2 feet deep... a very disturbing find indeed.

I have been debating with myself whether or not to post this story. Well, here I finally am - and here is my story.

A few weeks back I decided to work an old grove of trees that have given up some buttons and an 1852 3-Cent Peice in the past.

I wanted to give my arms a break so I took off the 12x15 and put on the stock procoil. About an hour into finding not much of anything, I came across a signal. It was one of those signals where you do a double take and quickly swing back to where you heard that sweet sound. Locating the spot, the signal was weak, but it was consistantly in the 12-43/44 range and the depth meter was pegged. I have experienced signals like this before, and usually they turn out to be large copper coins.

I dug a huge plug, so it would lessen the chances of damaging the object. I managed to get about 10 inches down. With the plug off to the side, I did a rescan with the E-Trac. Nothing in the plug. Swinging the coil over the hole, the signal was still there but a bit weaker. I probed the hole with my pinpointer - nothing. It must be deeper, so I dug some more. At this point I was about 16 inches down, and still the signal was in the center of the hole but deeper. I knew at that point that whatever the object was, it was large.

I started digging more and more until finally I spotted something - some kind of fabric. I uncovered it more and more, and eventually I pulled out a 4 foot long bed sheet, that was tied in a knot at the 4 corners. Small roots had grown through some of it, so I knew it had been there for a while. Using my pinpointer I probed the mass of fabric at the bottom of the hole. It vibrated and beeped; there was my target. I started thinking it could be a cache, but probably something else...

I used my shovel and cut through the bedsheet so I could see what was in the center. In the center there was a blanket, which matched the same color as the sheet. I could not see the target, but the blanket was wrapped tight and the metal target was inside of it.

I pulled with all my might at the sheet but it wouldn't budge. The mass of fabric was wider than the hole. All of the sudden I heard a small dog barking like crazy. I looked up and saw a little dog chasing a deer through the woods, and they were heading straight for me. The deer saw me and zagged away. The dog was so focused on the deer that it didn't notice me. Now that I think about it, it was really funny. I stopped my excavation and listened. The dog and the deer ran off and eventually it was quiet again. I called my friend and told him what I found. We speculated about what it could be and we agreed to come back at another time and dig it up together (better to have a witness I figured). I buried it back up, marked the spot, and went home.

My friend couldn't get out soon enough, and after 2 days I could not take the anticipation any longer - so I went out and finished the job. Wearing rubber gloves, I did some more digging and managed to get the enter mass of fabric out of the ground. Removing the bed sheet, only the blanket remained. I used my pinpointer and managed to pull out a metal object from the blanket. It was a copper celtic cross (sort of) and it was about 8" x 5". I unwrapped the blanket. It was not easy, cause it was really stuck together. Finally, the last fold was unfurled....

Bones and hair. No cache, only a corpse of an animal. No smell either, which was a bonus. It was probably in the ground for 20 years or so. I searched through the bones and located a jaw bone. Best I could tell, it was a dog. Mystery solved! I wrapped Fido back up with the cross and buried him back in his resting place. :goodnight:

The find was disturbing, but it's nice to know that the procoil has so much depth.

Dog Corpse is a strange thing to add to my finds list, dontcha think?

...is as you were digging up a dog, one appeared in the woods chasing a deer ! Maybe it was the dog reincarnated !!!!
