E-TRAC IN AUTO

I hunted in auto 28 with the pro coil and loved the way the E-TRAC handled the soil and was stable. Found a few Wheaties and 2 silver the other day. Today i tried it in my test garden with the same settings and could not pick up any of my coins over 8in deep. Now what? Do i hunt in auto or manual? Changed my settings to manual 26 and picked up all the coins but was getting those pesky short high chirps also.In auto i know now i will miss the deep coins but get the coins in the trash very well. Has anyone else figured out when to use auto and when to use manual? I set auto to 28 but it only would reach 22 maybe 23 when i was finding the coins in the park.In my test garden it would get up to 20 21 sounded great but just got no depth out of it. Any one have any info on this and what would you hunt in? Thanks

I switch back and forth between Auto +3 and Manual 30 depending on the conditions. I try always to hunt in Manual 30, even in the trashy areas, but there are times when I just can't take all the "fuss" and hunt in Auto +3. When I get an iffy signal I will switch to one or the other depending on which I'm hunting in to see if the signal stays the same, gets better, or gets worse. As a last resort sometimes I go to AM and check the screen but usually trust my ears.

AUTO is AUTO; there is no setting it to 28.
When in AUTO, the machine AUTOmatically adjusts the sensitivity.

Too many variables when discussing how deep your machine should be able to detect coins so I stay out of those discussions.

So far this is what works best for me here where I live and with the conditions that I have:

Like you, I hunt a lot of old parks that have a lot of trash. Most of the time I use the stock Pro coil. I normally hunt in AUTO +1 and will toggle to MANUAL 27 to check an iffy signal. While in AUTO, my sensitivity will fluctuate from 16 to 24, but usually stays around 22. A few things that will help you to find deeper targets is slow down your swing speed and make sure you are combing the grass with the coil throughout the entire side to side arc of your swing. 4 full seconds to complete a left to right swing and vice-versa. Many times the deeper targets will have muffled tone and the numbers will be inconsistent. Those are the targets I like to dig. I also don't like the real tight coin patterns that a lot of people use. I've got mine opened up to accept all FE signals 14 and below and all CO signals 10 and above. Some of the boys across the big pond who sleep with their machines will tell you that a more open pattern will get you a little more depth. Don't know if that has ever been proven, but I tend to think it's true.

Since first getting my E-Trac in November of 98, I've tried all kinds of different settings and coils. This works for me; it may not work for you.

when im in realy bad dirt thats loaded with mineral i will go into auto but in nice clean soil ill punch it into man. and jack the sens up to 28 ~ 29 ~ 30.
i dont worry about the trash. i know from testing the etrac that it actualy hits closer colocated targets the higher you run your sense.
and if you want the best of the unmasking ability it can offer run long tones or smooth with a man sens of 22 or higher.
if chirps get to crazy then watch your screen and see were most of them are hitting and then black them out. just dont forget to leave your coins open.
youl never find a perfect setting but you will find what you can deal with.

high man sense = falseing but better depth and seperation.
low man sense = less depth less seperation.
high auto sens = great hunt
low auto sens = a sorry hunt lol

Ive been using auto +3 in the parks and on the beach. Cross checked with manual and an open quick mask on the deepies. +3 in the wet salt sand i was diging pull tabs a solid 12 inches.

I'm usually in auto +3 for most sites but if i'm at a site where I know that the goodies are deep AND i'm getting alot of weak signals that are deep,(and good targets),I'll go to manual and bump it up to a higher level.

I hunt in Auto +3 in our local 125 year old park. It has seen many floods, because it sits along side the river, that have deposited a lot of mud over the coins. Some areas have deposited mud as deep as 24", and that means the coins are at least that deep. The good thing is this area slopes gradually over about a 75 yard area with the least deposits at one end, and the deepest at the other. A great place for testing detector. I simply start working my way from south(shallowest) to the north(deepest), and see how far each detector gets me. Right now the E-Trac has taken me into new territory.

I've tried manual but there just seems to be too much trash. I do set manual at 29 and use it to test iffy signals.

Ha! I lost a decade somewhere.
Wish that I would have had an E-Trac back in 98.
I could have cleaned out a few places.
I was using a Tesoro Bandido uMax back then.
Not a bad machine, but it's no E-Trac. Not even close.
