etrac - deep signals, pinpointing, and x1 questions

Hi All, I have had my etrac for awhile, still learning,

I am in the middle of reading Andy Sabisch etrac/explorer book which has been a great help.

I have a few questions, I use the pistol probe, and have ordered a sunray X1 probe (pistol probe is great, but theres no discrimination,
and often its just too powerful, but is perfect for non trashy areas. )
where is the normal/best place to mount the X1 (new version)? on the top/bottom/side?. also any tips on how to avoid having the cable hanging down/snagging.(its not arrived yet but want to be ready to install)

another question, A problem I am having is, i'm detecting a local wooded area, i'm in the UK and theres tons of history reported in the area, spanning over 1,000 years,
simply put, i'm getting too many signals, deep ones, the ground is not easy to dig, but getting a fair number of seemingly solid signals, reading at 6"+, some 12"+.

yet when I hit pinpoint on the etrac, it cannot read the signals, I end up having to leave these as there seems to be a signal every few feet.
I'm learning how to ingore/spot hot rocks, iron falsing etc, but what does it mean if I get a target, but pinpoint cannot find it? what sort of depth would it have to
be to fail to pinpoint?

I'm guessing many of these targets may be iron falsing or something else, that I will continue learning how to avoid.

Thanks all

I should add, items found at the location so far are a few new coins, lots of iron, and various bits that appear to be bronze, no idea what they are.

this is the other problem i'm having, almost everything I have found, is a fragment and I have no idea what they are, or were.
I guess this is a common issue in areas with so much history?. Thanks

I like the X-1 on the side of the handle.

Need to know the settings that you are running.

Hi, most of the wooded areas in the U K were mined and worked for the iron ore that was in the ground, and all the small bits of metal you are finding are from the workings. I detect in woods dating back to the iron age, and the only way foreward is to use a smaller coil (Minelab 7.5") I have never used the X1 I prefer the G pro pointer, anyway good luck in all you do mate, and keep learning.

Hello All,

Thank you,
i found various bits, I think some of it was shrapnel from anti aircraft fire, which someone id'ed for me.

i got the sunray today, put it on the top for now, best location for me.

Thanks again all.

I would just descriminate out the iron...from maybe 23 on the FE scale.I have the sunray on the top to.Easier to access and replace

Do not forget the the sunray is a great pinpointing device. I use it all the time to find out how near the target is so I can use a different tool to dig with

Hi,

Thanks, I set it up so iron is ignored,
I think the problem i'm having is the area is just way too trashy to get every signal,
I can single out the target on the etrac amongst the trash, but when I start digging all the iron confuses things.

I think I need to set decrimination on and only dig the clear signals for somewhere this trashy,
in the mean time I am looking for another place less trahsy I can get permission for.

The sunray probe is great, not got to use it much so far but its nice it being on there, auctally with sensitivity up, it seems it can be nearly as deep as the pistol probe,
nice having the control over how deep you want it to go via sensitivity.

Pistol probe is nice as well, will probably keep it for when I really need max depth/in a non trashy area.
but nice not having to carry a probe.

Thanks again, i'll keep learning, etrac is a great machine, seems fairly easy to get started with, but hard to master, as any detecting is I guess.

Hello All,

Well I got myself some permission for some farm land,
done a bit of one field, and I still get signals all the time, the problem is, i get lots of signals that read what seems to be in the
correct range, got one 12-22, others,01-40, 10-41,
but after I dig them they turn out to be random bits of metal(non iron), I guess there is no way around this,

It is in an area with 1000's of years of history, so I guess thats to be expected, just hope I can find something that I can ID or date
to know it is not modern.

Good luck all.

I would agree with you - there's no real way around it in your area. I would continue to dig everything and learn.

I remember when I dug my first hammered silver coin. I was very surprised at the low tone signal and numbers - the small thin ones display much different than you would expect, and many are down in "foil" range!

Problem is, you have to dig all those pieces of lead, buttons, bullets and other junk because some come in just like good stuff. You never know what could be next.

Good Luck!

Hi,

Thanks, The problem i'm having now is the etrac is showing 8+" deep signals, but the ground is very hard, I cannot get passed a few inches!.
or I could but it would take about 30 minutes per hole, I imagine we need some more rain to make it easier, or try a different field,. I guess rejecting targets known to be on the site such as shotgun shells, etc could save some time.

The other problem I'm having is pinpointing, everywhere I dig, it turns out to be maybe 4 inches elsewhere.
I will keep practicing, but anyone have any tips?. I switch to pinpoint mode on the etrac, but it seems to lock onto iron or something else, auctally getting an exact location of a target (with iron, or multiple other targets nearby) is causing me trouble.

tried various things, but it seems to detect an item accross a large amount of ground, pinpointing I can only seem to narrow it down to a few feet.
(sunray makes it easy if its not very very deep) if theres no trash near by its fairly simple.

This may be mainly a problem as some targets are large, cans etc.

Etrac is great, but I need to perfect my pinpointing skills :).

Thanks again.
