Etrac Headphones

alotasilver

New member
I just purchased a new etrac. I'm looking to buy a good set of headphones. I figured i'd ask you etrac users what type of headphones you prefer.

Thank You

I'm surprised your new machine didn't come with a set of Koss UR-30 head phones in the box, mine did.

I do not use the UR-30 head phones as I already owned a set of Grey Ghost head phones which I like a lot better. The Koss does not come with independent volume controls like the Grey Ghost do and I like the audio response you get from the Grey Ghost much better. The audio response is much smoother on the Grey Ghost head phones. The Grey Ghost head phones are not cheap. I think mine cost about $129.00, but for me it is well worth it as I wear hearing aids in both ears and the ability to adjust the ear pads independently is worth a lot to me.

I hope this helps. Rick "IL"

My machine did come with the koss UR-30 headphones. I'm looking for something with duel volume control and good quality sound.

Thank You,

Sunyray Pro Golds--hands down!----Best "marriage" I've found with h.p.'s for the Explorers/Etrac (and I've tried a bunch).

I posted the same question a little over a year ago - and I received about ten different answers.

It's really what set sounds the best and is the most comfortable to you. If possible, go to a local metal detector dealer and try as many headphones as possible in person - rather then just ordering on the internet.
I'm really happy with my "Gray Gost Ultimates" - but I think the bottom line is - any of the top of the line headphones from any of the major manufacturer's will do a good job.

Good Luck ! --- Mark

Detector Pro Black Widows are my favorite also, even in hot weather I wont give them up.

By now, you should be very confused by the many answers. Everyone will have their own preference. I finally went with the Sunray ProGold. The headphone socket on the E-trac is very shallow so the ProGolds do not seat all the way into the jack. This, however, does not hinder their performance and they do not "fall out of the jack", they lock in securely. They seal around the ears well, block out surrounding sounds and are all around great phones.

I'll put a little "kicker" in here!----(IMO), what I like most about the Pro Golds is there VERY nice tonal quality on the Explorers/Etracs--also like the comfortable fit, leather cups, (just right) length of cord & light (enough) weight.----Sunray had a little problem with breaking yoke head bands for a time but have since been "beefed up" the material where that isn't a problem with the newer ones.---The older ones (head bands) that did break could be replaced with no problem.----That breakage problem is "past history" anyway, as no problem in that regard with the newer ones.-------I didn't like the Ratphones either Nick---tonal response/quality was ok but didn't like other things about 'em.---They aren't making Rats anymore are they?-----Detector Pros are "ok"--used NDT's for several years till I settled on the Pro Golds.-----All this is JMHO & you know what they say about opinions!! :)------Like the man said, try 2 or 3 different types (if you have that opportunity) & purchase the ones you like best.------------Del

I modified a David Clark H10-76 military headset with 150 ohm speakers and removed the microphone. I also made a pigtail adapter for a mono plug. That way I didn't have to deal with modifying the original plug. I got them lightly used from ebay. They are extremely comfortable and the outside noise reduction is amazing! This model headset is currently being used in combat and should last forever.

I have both the Sunray Pro Gold and the Killer B wasps - both are awesome, sound very similar to each other (to my ears) and are 1000% better than the stock Koss.
When I let my buddy use the Pro Golds on his newly purchased E-Trac he could not believe the difference in tonal quality vs the stock phones.

Sun Ray phones work great and so do Killer-Bs. I use both. I use the K-B Hornets because they have slightly deeper cups but I am sure the Wasps are fine too.
In the summer when it is really hot and sweat is a problem I sometimes use cheap-o Radio Shack phones that just sit on the ear. They have a 1/8 inch jack so you need an stereo adapter. They also make an extension with a voulme control inline for the cheap-o phones. They wrok just fine for most hunting when it's so hot you can hardly see.

For most you will find that the Sun Ray Pro Golds is preferred by many as they do have good tone quality. I have bought and sold many different sets and I find the ones that most preferred have been the Sun Ray Pro gold, but the Gray Ghost Ultimate and the NDT have also been some of the favorites for those i have dealt with. Now for me with my bad hearing I need max volume and none of these give me the volume I need so I try many different sets and found the Troy Pros have the best tone and volume for me on my Explorers and my E-Tracs, but not on the Sovereign which does better for me with the Timberwolfs. Neither of they are being built anymore or not at this time so a guy let me try another set he just got and these are just as good on the E-Trac I have right now. These are custom built by Detector Pro for a dealer and are called Bushmaster as these have the volume for those like me with the bad hearing and need the volume and good tone quality.

I prefer the Air Headz wireless modular system myself. I do have the Sunray Pro Golds and have them as a back up. I used the the Pro Gold's for many years and they are great. But when I discovered the Airheadz, I thought they were AWESOME. I cant explain the freedom you have not having the cord attached. You can get them with the modular cord so if you forget to charge the headphones (been there done that) you can still use the headphones.

I decided to try the black widows. I like the idea that they block most of the outside noise. I'll let you know how they work out when i get them.

Thank you,
Earl
