All of us have experienced similar receptions as in the post "los angeles barrio hunt" below:ranting:. I have a solution and it's quite simple: Mine lab, Whites, Fischer, Tessoro and all the major players in this field should band together in a public service type announcement (a commercial) showing a guy and his small son metal detecting in a park, digging a plug, while some nosy B is watching, then a narrator would say "did you ever wonder what these people are doing? They are enjoying the rewarding sport of metal detecting" pan to the the little boy showing a Mercury dime to the nosy woman who then says "wow, did you find that?" and the little boy says "yeah, and all this junky stuff to" ;as he dumps some trash out on the picnic table. You know broken this and sharp that. pan to dad putting back the undamaged horseshoe plug and patting done the grass like know ones been there and then the narrator says "metal detecting, not just rewarding for the people who do it, but helpful for the community as well" pan to the little boy dumping the trash in a garbage can and dad rubbing his head lovingly. Same kind of a commercial should run in coastal areas but this time it's on a beach, you know, showing trash like those five inch long rusty, iron spikes their kids are swimming over and walking on bare foot, broken glass bottles with metal caps still on and such, and to sell detectors; a gold ring or such found, this time with a little girl, who would stop a little boy or girl from digging treasure, come on. These manufacturers would easily sell more machines which would more than pay back the costs of the commercials and the publics opinion of our sport would change............ greatly. What do you think??

All I can say is you are reading my mind!! Something has got to be done. as I see it we are the suckerfish in the tank.....cleaning the parks and beaches.....and saving an injury from happening....as long as we all fill our holes and leave a better enviroment to enjoy....hey.....we do the work we should get paid for the service.....we get to keep the coins and rings and dispose of the junk and sharpies that injur the loved ones.

several years now and as you can see, it looks as good today as ever".

I had a letter one time from the headmaster of a small private school that gave me permission to hunt the play ground anytime I wanted to. I always gave personal items found to the office so that they may be returned to their rightful owner. We had a great relationship. The school, because it was so small, did not have a lunch room so all of the kids, and teachers, had to bring their lunches. Coin operated snack machines and drink machines were available so you can imagine the clad in the wood chips. Rarely did I leave with less than 20.00 in my apron.

One day a lady in a car stopped by me as I was searching the driving lanes where the kids loaded and unloaded. She asked me what I was doing, in a very rude way. I explained to her what the hobby was all about and she told me that I'd better leave before she called the cops. I, very politely, explained to her that I had permission to be here. She started yelling at me so I turned around and put my headphones back on and continued back to where I left off. She went squealing off and sure enough about 30 minutes later a cop showed up. (By the way I was a 5th generation Fla. native of this little town. My grandparents help found the town before it was granted a township.) So, of course the cop was a personal friend of mine, we'd gone to school together. He was also a detectorist. He asked if I'd been having any luck, I showed him my bulging nail apron, he laughed, wrote up a report, I showed him my letter, all was great. He left, went to the ladies house up the street and a few minutes later he drove back by, honked his horn, I waved to him and he turned around the corner and was out of sight. Later the old bag drove by, gave me a dirty look as I waved to her and that was it.

The moral of the story is..... I had every right to be there doing what I was doing. Unless I felt that I was in danger, I was not leaving until I was ready to.
Know your local laws and if you have a right to be where you are at, and you are not causing major damage, the cops cannot make you leave. If it gets ugly and you are within your rights as a private citizen, there are plenty of lawyers that will pick up your case and then you'll have plenty of time to hunt that park or many others that you have a right to. Just make sure that you are within your right to be there.

I hunt mostly in city/suburban areas and as well as parks, ballfields, etc., I do a lot of hunting in the strips of grass between sidewalk and street. People have not been overly obnoxious but quite a few have asked if I had a permit to do what I was doing. I generally tell them "no, and I don't need one". There is a legal concept referred to as the silence of the law that means if some activity is not statutorily prohibited then it may be done. The type of people that try to stop us, or anyone enjoying something, through intimidation or calling the cops are people who want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

I once read an article in treasure hunting magazine where a metal detector user was told to quit hunting by some old woman, when the detector user asked why he should stop the reply he got from the old woman was that the radiation from the coil will kill the sand worms. Honestly this is very true. I went to a park the other day and found 1 coin with my explorer se , wow it seems every inch of land has been worked before these days. I mean people must have hammered to death sites in years gone by probably a lot of sites were worked hard in the 1970's. & 80/s..

But what do you think about the commercial? I was hoping you guys would respond as to what you thought about the larger makers of our metal detectors and recipients of our money for their products taking some of that money,(our money), and producing some commercials to educate the public of the public service we are doing for them. If everyone that reads this post responds to it as being a good idea then maybe they might do it. Which is what I would love to see as it would benefit us all.

This is why a good set of NVG's and a Ghillie suit are a super investment. I only hunt at night, and I am just a shadow passing on the wind....
