EXCAL-II,AUTO OR NOT TO AUTO?

hey can you guys tell me how or what you use as far as auto on sens, auto or do you use your own fine tuning? if not what is your general settings for sens, and descr. if not in auto thanks

Sensitivity usually between 11 o'clock and 2 o'clock Discrimination1. This setting works for me in salt and fresh water. Land settings would be a little different to maintain a steady threshold although I don't use the Excal on land a lot it is a very capable land machine. HH :minelab:

Me too except when I am using the WOT then I drop it down to around 3 o'clock No need to go nuts on the sensitivity

Your settings hava a lot to do with how mineralized your soil/sand is ......Start off in Auto , and if things seem pretty quiet , try going out of Auto to the 3 o'clock position and work your way back counter clockwise until you can't deal with the noise .....I always remember Critter talking about the 2 o'clock area ....Not a bad place to be on the dial ....Jim

I usually get to about 1 o'clock with the dial. Bad things start to happen if you use too much. Usually the coil will give a false reading if it touches wet sand.

With the stock 10" coil today I just had to run in Auto at one beach in order to keep the threshold stable. Manual would only get it stable at almost the lowest sensitivity level on the dial and I found that it still didn't provide as smooth of operation or as much depth is Auto did for this particular beach. If you have to adjust the sensitivity lower than say about 3PM on the dial then might as well throw it into Auto because that's right around the depth Auto will get anyway and it'll run so much smoother. That's my rule of thumb...if the machine won't run stable unless I'm lower than about 3PM on my GT then I just flip over to Auto and be done with it. You'll get the same amount of depth and yet a much more stable machine.

great info guys thanks so much.I sarted in auto and seemed very stable but that was in fresh cedar lake water so,when I get to the salt this weekend will try it out, thanks again.

ok I will have to wait a bit, maybe next week I will make it to the beach,my buddy says he always stays in auto? but I am up for new things, thanks

Depends on the site. I've been places where nothing but near lowest manual would get the machine stable, yet Auto was smooth as silk and got me the depth of about 2 or 3PM (which I couldn't use because they were unstable). However, just today at a rough beach I found Auto was adjusting down to the lowest I've ever seen it. The lowest manual setting was giving me more depth! Never seen that. Usually Auto is doing about 2 to 3:30PM depth wise compared to manual. Different moisture, humidity, and even stray RF noise on any given day can make it highly variable as to where Auto is setting it's self at. I'd only say test it on a buried target. Keep putting it deeper until Auto is having a hard time with it. Now throw it over to manual and see how high you have to go with manual before it starts doing better than Auto on that day. Now hunt in manual that way and see if it's stable. If not then obviously Auto is the way to go in certain rough grounds. Don't assume Auto is always giving you the depth of manual at a certain setting. I learned that lesson today (see PP/Discrimination thread for that novel).

Then again, I wonder if Auto is going so low on this beach for me because the 10" Tornado is having such a hard time with this specific beach's minerals. Going to have to test Auto on the 12x10 when it arrives at that beach and then compare it's depth to manual to see where it ends up being at. I bet it will calibrate higher because these SEF coils seem to run more stable and pick up less RF noise, or at the very least don't get bumped around by ground mineral content as much.

I've got silver coins on land in Auto at rough spots that I plain out missed with my prior Explorers there. I gridded the tar out of this spots with the Explores I've owned over the years. Here comes the Sovereign walking around in Auto and silver quarters and dimes pop up at 7 to 8" deep that I have no idea how I missed with my Explorers. Although they were in clean spots I expect the mineral and/or iron content of the soil changes enough to where Auto is able to "track" it like ground tracking and light up those coins. All I know is that if you've got a honey hole that you've gridded out in manual I would highly recommend to re-work it in Auto. I bet you'll be shocked what Auto finds in it's own way that no static manual setting can get for some odd reason.

CH....Depends on the site
. You are 100% correct...CH..I don't think I have every used auto, where I have hunted. Maybe West Coast Florida around Anna Marie Island once. Amazing how different locations can affect your machine. Maybe I missed it some where but what is your located? So I can take note of the conditions. thanks ....joe
