Expensive mistake

I got out for about and hour last night and I found a Barber dime, a wheat and some clad, I could see that the Barber was a 1908, a common date I thought, so I took a soft brush and soap and water to clean it as I usually do to my finds before carding the keepers in 2X2's. After cleaning the back I noticed an O mint mark, a semi-rare date and here I had brush scratches all over both sides of the coin. Not that I ever sell my finds, but it still makes me sick that by not being careful, I took a $95 dime and turned it into a $45 dime in a matter of a few seconds.

BE CAREFUL CLEANING YOUR FINDS!!!!!!!!!

An excellent find, Larry. Sorry about the scratches, but, it sure is a pretty one!

And a GOOD LOOKING coin it is ! ! ! :-(

Larry great find. I usually use the old Arm and Hammer baking soda to clean my silver. Just moisten some and rub it on the coin with your fingers and the tarnish and dirt will come off. You may have to do it a few times but it helps avoid scratching. Keep finding those old ones. Andy

She's still a beauty Larry! :cheekkiss: Nice find Honey. HH to all, Nancy

Does anybody use an ultrasonic cleaner or have tried one to clean finds? They are expensive and not everyone just has one sitting around, perhaps a jeweler would clean a coin or two for you.

 Yea, we have a couple of them and they work pretty good. (When they are used)
