Explorer 2 Noise Cancel

I once read somewhere that the noise cancel in the Explorer-2 manual was incorrect. I don't recall where I read this.
I think it does not make any difference for noise cancel. Ground balance is not the same as noise cancel. Does the detector care for noise? If your in an area of electrical/magnetic crosstalk I would think the air in front of me would be the same as the ground in regards to interference.
Do you noise cancel in the air or on the ground?

With the Explorer II I always found a quiet spot on the ground and hit noise cancel. Right or wrong that's what I did.
The book on the SE says noise cancel in the air. I called Minelab and asked several questions and one of the was about this. I was told that the book was wrong and I should noise cancel on the ground same as with the EX II. When in an area that is a problem area I should noise cancel in the air towards the source of interference and then again on the ground.
So far I have just been doing the same as I did with the EX II and it works fine.
In short your guess is as good as mine.

I have herd both. But I do it with it on the ground in a clean spot, and its does the trick as the manual states. It works for me. Try it both ways and see what works for you.

I do it like the manual says, coil in a spot with no targets near and coil on the ground motionless.
I know it works on some of the beaches I hunt that have powerlines running right by them and also will quiet the EX down when near other machines. Seems like a good feature to me.

I talked to minelab also they said point the detector coil at power lines, radio towers and noise cancel and then at the ground sometimes I will noise cancel 2 or 3 times before the detector will quite down it seems to work for me HH RonC

I have alway did it the same on all the Explorer, just hold it off the ground about 12 inches and don't move it while it is doing the auto noise cancel. Seem to work good for me.
