F5 loosing signal

Digger 45

Active member
My F5 will pick up a signal of a target such as a coin on one or two swipes and than no signal but hit pinpoint and it sounds off. Go off of pinpoint and no signal. This use to happen when it was foil but now it is on all targets.

I have tried different adjustments and the same thing happens and it seem that it takes a long time for it to change from PP back to original setting.

Anyone have this problem, or a fix for this?

Here is a behavior of my Omega from my benchtesting notes:

Flattened Bud Light Bottlecap + 5" DD Coil

BC will not drop down to iron range when using heel technique unless disc is set to 5 or less. At 5 or more disc, during the heel technique, instead of producing audio signal break-up/VDI iron range readings, there is audio silence/VDI unchanged from center of coil reading.
The 11" DD & Concentric coils will give a high tone with targets separated by 5" only at shallower depths. 4" on 11" DD and 5" on Concentric. At greater depths they combine the VDI's to produce an averaged reading. 58-61 on 11" DD and 55-58 on Concentric.

sounds like its the way the coin or whatever it may be is layin in the dirt did u try x ing the target and see if that helps u get a steady signal? if not its probaly just trash or u got youer discrimination to high. mine does the same thing on nails i got discrim on 8 and it will hit kinda high but then u get the low tone and nothing.

Usually it will only hit one way which is usually junk, but then i pin point and locate the target, then it won't sound off at all no matter which way i swing, but i can locate it again with the pin point. Then digging up a coin not junk.

This happens a lot so i can't depend on the chris cross technique, It didn't use to work this way when new, it would always sound off as long as it was a coin and the discrimination was down low.

Just seems odd. I have a email in to Fisher and we will see what they say and i will post the results.

yea man,let me know what they got to say because i was out today and had signal, dig it loose signal, fill hole signals back, pull dirt back out and loose it again and it only hit a time or to then quits sordof the same issue. kinda thinkin i should ove got a garrett pro

A year or two ago there was a similar report, the customer sent the machine in, and a defect (I don't remember precisely what) was found and repaired.

Digger_45, your description of what's wrong could sound to someone like user error or a misunderstanding of what's normal on an F5, as has already happened in this thread with people who are knowledgeable posting trying to help. However because of that previous incident I'm pretty sure that it's not user error or misunderstanding, something went wrong with your machine and it needs to go back to the factory. When you send it, please include a note describing the problems, mention this thread, and also say that Dave Johnson is aware of the situation and is pretty darn sure the problem is in the machine and not user error or misunderstanding. Thank you.

Thanks Dave i have at least 100 hours on this machine and i believe i know it pretty well, i will do what you say and will let you know what we find out. Still one of the best detectors out there.

Got to love good business and their great people that take pride in what they are doing.

Thanks Dave We appreciate your comments

Thats so cool that dave johnson follows this forum!!!!! Those guyes at fisher are like rockstars of the detector engineering world. I have f75se omega and f70 and love tham. Was a whites man for years. If fisher would come out with wireless like xp deus and water proof like at pro with power of f75se they'd put EVERYONE out of business

Well its been a week today since Fisher received my F5 and i haven't heard from them i guess i will have to give them a call. Can't believe that you miss something so much until its gone. Just not having it available when the need arises is an empty feeling. Didn't realize i depended on it so much. Hope they have found the problem and i can start swinging again.

Thanks again Dave for your help.

Will be leaving for the beach on the 16th for ten days so hope its back and ready to go.

Wow just called Fisher and my F5 will arrive to me today, they got it on thursday and repaired it and shipped it out on the following Monday, Two day turn around, Thats amazing.

Thanks Fisher

I had an intermittent pinpoint problem with my F5 a couple years ago. Sent it in to FT and got a call from Lupe saying he had taken my unit detecting at a local park and had not been able to duplicate the problem.

I told him I understood and when the problem became more constant I would send it back in. About an hour later I got a call back from Lupe saying he tried some more and was able to get the detector pinpoint to misfunction and they would be sending me a new detector.

I haven't had any problems since, but it sounds like nothing's changed since my last repair issue - to the First Texas service department!

Here is what Fisher found: Replaced the Membrane switch and the ground balance switch. Looks like everything is new except the housing. All knobs are new, the face is new and it works GREAT!! I had forgotten how quick it responds and with great accuracy .

Again thanks Fisher for the great service and customer care.
