First day out with the Safari

I was a little worried about my decision to go with the Safari. When I put it together, it felt a little heavy, but it does weigh 2 pounds less than my Whites 6000di pro sl. I did some air tests on different targets in both ferrous and conductivity tones. I then planted some coins in the sod, ground still frozen in back yard so I couldn't bury them. I practiced pinpointing. Very different from what I was used to. I thought I was going to have some trouble with this.
I had read the manual several times before even purchasing the safari and I read the Quattro book the night I received the detector.
Still a little apprehensive about my decision, I headed to an old park that has been hunted a lot. I had already set up a coins program and crossed saved it to the Relic mode so I would have conductivity tones with only numbers for the TID. I set the sensitivity at 14 although I could have set it higher, I wanted to start at a lower setting. I started out with Trash Density set at low per Andy's suggestion in the book.
Discrimination was set at reject -10 to -1 and +40

I only dug targets that registered at 14, 15 and 30 on up.
I just wanted to get a feel for the sounds and pinpointing. I started digging coins right away and pinpointing was a lot easier than I expected. It was very precise. I left it in Low Trash Density for the most part as the area was not too trashy, but then noticed the threshold blanking a lot in one area and then changed to High. I did a Noise Cancel again. High Trash Density setting really does make the detector act differently. Right away I was picking up a couple of coins mixed in the trash that I missed in Low Trash Density. Andy said in the book that Low Trash Density makes the TID more stable and that is definitely true as in High the numbers did bounce a little but it was not difficult to pick out the good targets based on the tone.

All in all in was a pretty good first outing as I found 2 Quarters, 7 dimes, 5 Pennies, a 1918 and a 1939 Wheatie, a 1941 Nickel, a 1938 Buffalo Nickel and a Sterling Silver ring. The inside of the ring reads Sterling-U-Made in USA.

After just a few hours use I gotta say the Safari is a keeper. I love this detector. I love the sounds it makes, the TID and the weight isn't as much of an issue as I thought it would be. The two wheaties I dug were 8 inches down and the tone was right on. I used my trowel to make a visual mark at how deep they were when I finally got down to them and measured it when I got home. I have a feeling I will be digging coins deeper than I am used to. May have to get a Back Hoe.

I can't wait to get out again.

Here are a few pics of the ring I found. Nothing special, but I was pretty excited to get a ring the first time out.

Another satisfied customer!!! Great finds. I can't wait for the snow to melt and warm up here again. I have a few tricks to pull in the field when I can get out again..:detecting:

Where are you located that your lucky enough to hunt in Jan??? It's looking for me to be the end of Feb at the earliest to swing the new safari....I'm gonna set mine up in the cross saving also, but I'm going with it set in Relic then crossing to Coin and Jewely...... I like hearing the ferrous sound and there is a difference between a reg dime and a silver one.. It seems to me that the weight of this detector is a bit lighter then the explorer.... not sure tho, just seems to be..

Anyway, heres to continued sucess for ya.

Where are you located in Ohio? I have folks outside of Xenia, Bowersville, Sabina.. I was born in Willmington:thumbup:

I'm in Boise, Idaho. Weather here is typically in the 40's in January. Yesterday was a bit chilly though with the high only at 38 but I had to get out.
This is what I woke up to this morning, but it is to turn to rain and should be gone soon. Highs expected to be near 50 by end of week.

Hey mark i see you have a safari have to watch your post and see how they work in Ohio.Well hope you can get out soon to cold now everywhere.Be waiting to see what kind of depth and old coins you post.I go in and out of the forums to see what everyone is finding especially like to look at people in Ohio to see what machine works best in soil here.Never tried a minelab so i look a x-terra the explorer forum and safari forum e-trac too but cant afford that.So i look on ebay and check prices and some times buy old technology to try like maybe minelab ex.Waiting to see your post.Does it have a attachment to melt snow as you hunt?

Hey Dan-o glad to see you love the safari. I am envious of you in the respect that you are able to do some detecting and I can't. Here in Western Massachusetts we probably have 6-8 in. of frozen earth under the snow cover. I was once a grave digger and on many occassions we had to use a jack hammer to get through the frost . Good to read that you find the safari easy to use, I usually leave my Safari on high density, the jumpy numbers don't bother me. I just slow down my hunting speed a little, and usually don't miss much. My wife and I are going to Rhode Island for our 18th anniversary, and like every year in mid Feb. we go detecting the salt water beaches. The nice thing about the salt water beaches is that the sand hardly ever freezes . Anyhow congrats on the Safari and those good finds. I wonder if you have an emerald in the ring. Ya the explorer was/is the true champ at finding old coins in the soil in my particular area............... Since its the same fbs freq... i'm expecting similar results from the safari.......... Ya, an infra-red coil would help at getting rid of the snow..lol Hope to try it soon.... Will let ya know how she does..

Thanks keep my eye on ebay looking at xs or i say some older models or newer like you have if it does great.Be waiting to see your post. Doesn't it drive you crazy that you want to try it every where but the snow wont melt or your finger freeze after about 20 minutes.Hoping the weather gets some what better to get out for hour or two.

Just remember, when someone in your area asks what's the best detector to tell them it's the Ace 250!

That way they clear out the pulltabs and clad and we get to keep the deep stuff for ourselves.

Way 2 go Sky> I'm still jumping around with my thoughts between the Gt & the Safari but now after hearing your feelings I will rethink the Safari. See I can't get a machine until the guy at the store comes back from his holidays in late Feb. I'm getting very impatient and makes me think to much . And Andy's book every one is talking about I sure hope I can get one here in Canada. Anyways keep up the good work.

Nice finds hope you get out this weekend.I see mark in ohio just got one waiting for him to post but the weather is pretty lousy here. This is how it works get a new machine or coil to try and it snow or rains hard all week and you are also the last drop off from the ups truck when your waiting for something

Your right Fred..weather is not cooperating and ground is concrete..... Predicting a major snow blow-out starting on Fri and ending Sat sometime..6' for sure maybe up to 12' is the predict....Man , I hope this is WRONG!!!!! I gotta out and find me some deeeeep silver..

will advise on the safari soon...hopefully

I just set up a program on my xlt and went out in the yard seems to work good but after about 20 minutes my fingers started to freeze up. Want to try it out somewhere else but snow every where.I was hoping you would get out with the new machine and post some pics iam curious about how it works in Ohio. Was waiting to see if you hit some areas you have gone over before to see what you find.:thumbup::detecting:Hope you get a chance to get out

That's a real cool looking ring - even if it's not valuable it will sure look real nice in your display !

Good luck this season with the Safari - it's a great machine !
