I finally had a chance to take my new Manticore out into the woods last week. I returned to a mid to late 1800s home site on my property. I located the site a few years ago from a 1877 county atlas, map overlays, and gps coordinates. Using that information, I found a pile of large stones in the woods, likely from the foundation or chimney. I detected there several times 4-5 years ago and found several civil war era GS military buttons, brass bullet mold, etc., But did not find any coins. So armed with my new Manticore, I returned hoping to find a keeper of some kind. The first target with my Manticore sounded good and target trace creating the small dot around 89-90, but also had the target trace at the top and coming down some. I thought probably iron but dig and find out. As it turned out it was 8-9” deep and was the 1838 large cent. I nicked it on the back but was extremely pleased. There are tons of square nails and other iron littering this site. The small two piece button has a brass front and an iron back with a flower (rose?) design on the front. The 3 ring bullet is interesting. It is a solid base, with a 1/8” +- divot out of the center of the base. It measures .549” in dia., .830” tall, and weighs 24.9 grams (384.2 grains). The only bullet, that I have seen on the net close to these numbers, is a Merrill carbine bullet. If anyone can help me identify it, I would appreciate the information. The new Manticore was definitely NOT a disappointment. In the past I used a CTX, Nox 800, Deus, and Deus II at this site. The conditions were right and I was just lucky enough to walk across these keepers with the Manticore. Capped silver is on my bucket list. Maybe there is one there waiting on me. LOL …………PS – Sorry about this being so long.
