Today was my first day out with my new Etrac. Overall I must say WOW! I really did not expect to do all that well as I knew it would take me a little while to get used to it. I made the hour and half drive to meet up with Dr. Bill to do some detecting. Our first stop was at an old park he had hunted before. I found a good deal of clad along with the two wheaties (both in same hole) and the silver whale ring. I was pretty happy about all the clad I pulled out of there with trash all around it. Twice I pulled a coin out from under an old rusty nail. The Etrac never skipped a beat and told me exactly what to expect before I dug. We then took a break and went to get a bite to eat. The day was getting close to an end so we hit an old church in town that Dr. Bill had hunted before. We didn't stay long and I only got a clad dime out of there. Our last stop was an old Masonic Lodge that has been there for a long time. The building was something else before the lodge owned it. Within 15 mins or so we were hunting in the dark with our only lights being the backlight on the Etrac and the LED from our Garret Pro-pointers. I found about a $1 worth of the clad here along with the 1911 V Nickel. I dug this bad boy from only at about 3-4 inches and a foot or so out from the trunk of an old tree. It rang up as a 12-12 steady. I had checked some of my coins the previous night and new that a Buffalo rang up just the same so this is what I was hoping for. I could tell as soon as I got it out of the hole that it wasnt a Jefferson. Took a few minutes to get enough light to see exactly what it was. I was very pleased once I did. This coin is not only my first V Nickel but also my oldest coin to date.
All-in-all I had an absolute blast with a good friend and hunting partner. We both did pretty well on the day (will let him post what he got). I think I was very lucky with this being the first time out with the Etrac. It's a huge step up from my Bounty Hunter 3300. Can't wait to hit some places tomorrow!
