Found A Few Old Coins Yesterday

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
I stopped to hunt the back of an old school when I got done delivering a load of firewood yesterday.
I only had an hour or so to hunt because it was getting dark fast - cold, windy and we were getting some light snow.
Even though it's been around 10 to 15 degrees every night for the last few weeks - you can still dig in areas where the grass is taller and where ever theres a lot of leaves.

Found 1916 & 1937 Buffalo Nickels, a 1944 Wheat Cent and five newer coins.

I agree Bill ...
A lot of times you come across a new place that you can hunt in your travels - even real short hunts can produce some nice finds - just about every time I left my machine home - I've regreted it !

Nice finds Mark, those Nickels are in good shape, the few Buffalo's I have found have been in such bad shape you could barely make out the date. Did you clean them? If so how did you do it. Finding something on those quick hunts make you makes you feel good. HH, Randy.

Nice finds... Congratulations!

Actually the 1916 Buffalo is in pretty rough shape - the 1937 is in much better than average condition.

From what I've seen - on average - your lucky to be able to read the dates on one Buffalo Nickel out of three !
You can buy a small bottle of "Buffalo Nickel Date Restorer" in coin shops or on the internet for about $4.00 - I guess it etch's the date so you can read it ?

I clean my Nickels and Clad coins in a mixture of White Vinegar and Table Salt - just put a few ounces of vinegar an a tablespoon or so salt in a plastic container and put the coin in - shake it up and let it sit - usually takes anywhere from 10 to 20 min.to disolve all the crud thats on the coin - then just buff it with a Scotch Brite pad or very fine Steel Wool. Just make sure it's not a Key Date Coin before you clean it !

I clean all my old copper coins, Large Cents and Silver coins when needed - in an Electrolysis bath - in my opinion - it is hands down - the best way to clean encrusted copper coins !
You can build your own Electrolysis set up in about 15 miniutes - for under $5.00 - just type "copper coin cleaning" in Google and it will bring you web sites that will tell you step by step how to build your own.

Happy Holidays ! --- Mark
