Found A Few Old Coins Yesterday

I went back to an old town picnic area yesterday - got a one hour hunt in before it started snowing really hard. Got a nice - deep FE 12 - CO 11/13 hit - turned out to be a 1928 Bufallo Nickel - took exactly one step - another Bufallo Nickel - this one was a 1927 - both were down about 5" and they were only four feet apart. Thinking I could be on to an old pocket spill - I searched the entire area. Didn't find any other coins in that area but I ended up finding a 1948-D Wheat Cent on the way out. In this part of the country - any hunt this time of the year - is a good hunt - it sure was great to see a few old coins come out of the ground again !

PS - I used a bench grinder to put a real sharp tip on my Lesche digger a few weeks ago - this sharper tip makes it much easier to get though the frost in the ground !
I just dig a little wider than usual - so I don't destroy a nice find with it.

Nice finds ! Buffalo nickels and wheaties a good combination .

I have to give you credit out there digging. I would if everything didn't have 3 foot of frozen snow and then 3 foot of frost in the ground. Boss gave me off today due to weather, and can't keep my mind off pondering if there is a local place to dig where its for some oddball reason not so bad.

Nice finds! Thanks for the story and the pictures.

Nice Finds!!!! Congratulations!!!!

I clean Nickels and Clad ( any copper core coins) in a mixture of approx. 4 oz. of White Vinegar with a a few teaspoons of table salt mixed in.
Cleaning usually takes 5 to 15 min. in this solution - then I use a scotch brite pad or very fine steel wool to buff them up. And yes - I always make sure the coin is not a key date before cleaning it.

I clean all my solid copper and silver coins and jewelry in an Electrolysis bath - it is - hands down - the best way to clean finds - but if you clean Nickels and other copper cored coins in an Electrolysis bath - the outside of the coin usually turns copper color !

Very nice, thank you for sharing. The last Buffalo I found was with onions and pickels with a side of fries. Yours looks tastier. Thank you for sharing.

Moose.
