Found a little head while out detecting Saturday. Part:1. Cool!!!

James N.D.

New member
I'm back once again with the finds from the past weekend fellas. Hunted both Saturday and Sunday and had some nice surprises both days. So let's get to it!

Saturday Morning, Tim, Dan and I headed back to the location where I had found the 21 Indian Heads the weekend before in hopes of making a few more great finds. Dan found a few Wheat Pennies and a Merc with a few other finds as well such as a few Marbles and such. Tim found a couple Indians, a Token, a few Wheats, a Foreign Coin dated 1931, a Buffalo Nickel and some Silver (can't recall exactly what he found but nothing big for Silver). Rick and Lavonne even came back and joined in on the hunt on Saturday and both found a few Keepers. Lavonne found a V-Nickel for sure but can't remember what else she may have found. Rick found an 1884 Indian Head, a V-Nickel, a Wheat Penny or 2, a Fishscale dated 1893, and what I think maybe a Gold Ring with maybe a 1/4 Carat Diamond in it. The Band didn't have any markings due to how thin and small it was but it looked Gold and it read 1 on Digital, right in the Tinfoil Range where Gold should read when that small. Hope she turns out to be real Rick and if it does, I wish I would have been the one to dig her! WTG Buddy!!! The reason Rick found this Ring is because he was using his Fisher this time and digging a lot of Nails, and just about anything that gave a good Signal, he dug it. Goes to show that all that work can pay off. What I found was what I thought was one of the neatest finds I have found to date. I got a little Head made of Lead. Hey!! That Rhymes!!!:lmfao: I don't know what it is from, if it was a Toy or possibly for the end of a Pencil way back when, but this is a really Neat Item. I also found a bunch of Misc. Items as well. For Coins, I found a Fishscale, 3 Merc's, 1 Barber Dime, 1 Rosie, 1 Jefferson Nickel, 4 Indian Heads, 1 Silver Quarter, and a few Wheat Pennies. Even though it didn't turn out to be like last time's hunt, everyone had fun and found a few Keepers to bring home with them.

Sunday, I decided to stop by a Park that I have done well at before in the past and give the Pro Coil a work out to see what it could do. I started detecting digging multiple Screw Caps and a few Newer Coins. After about an Hours hunt time, I finally got that Signal and ID that I had been hoping to find. I looked at the Depth Meter and it was over 3/4ths the way down and was Loud and Clear reading a Very Nice Solid 28 on Digital. I then went into Smart Find to see where the Cross Hairs were at and I was excited. It was Locked onto a Half Dollar! So I proceeded to dig a Plug, being very careful digging the Dirt out. I used the X-1 Probe to see how close I was in Pinpoint and I was getting very close to where the Target was. I then angled the Lesche way back and stuck it Deep into the dirt so not to hit the Target. I pulled back and took the Digger out of the hole. I then seen the Target down in the hole which was a good 10"+ Deep and it was a Half. YIPPEE!!! I thought for sure it was going to be a Barber Half but not this time. It was a Walker but I will take it without any regret. I then covered the hole and called Rick(ND) up. He didn't answer at first but he called back. I asked him what he was doing and he told me he was working on his Wood Cutter. I told him that I thought I should give him a call and let him know I just dug a Walker at 10"+ with the Pro Coil over an area that has been worked before by many Explorer User's, including myself. The Ground was Dry so this may have been a factor in why it was never picked up before with the other Detectors. I have noticed that I have been digging Deeper Coins in Drier Ground with the Pro Coil which is just blowing my mind. I love this Coil!!! I chatted with Rick and told him about getting a few other finds the night before on the way back home and told him the Pro Coil is really starting to impress me. We got done chatting and I started detecting again. I dug 2 more Rosie's, a few more Wheats, and 2 more Silver Quarters before I called it a day. The Quarters were Very Deep, at least 10" if not all of 11" and gave Strong Repeatable Signals. They were surprises since I never went to Smart Find to see where they were hitting, thus putting a smile on my face when I seen they were Quarters. This is one Neat Park and hope it keeps giving some great finds on return hunts.

So let's get to the finds I got during Sat. and Sun. I ended the weekend with 12 Silver which included 1 Walking Liberty Half Dollar dated 1936, 3 Washington Quarters dated 1944-s,1948, and 1951-d, 1 Barber Dime dated 1899, 3 Merc's dated (2)1918-d and 1924, 3 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946,1946-d, and 1954 and 1 Canadian Fishscale dated 1910. I found a Foreign Coin once again made of Aluminum that reads 1 Etat Francias on the Front and on the Back reads Travail Famille Patrie 1 Franc 1943. Some of the Letters are hard to read so it may read a bit different but that's about what I can make out. I also found 1 Jefferson Nickel dated 1939 and 1 Canadian Penny dated 1938 which will be together in a Pic. I dug 4 Indians and they are dated (2)1893,1901, and 1908(no S). The 1908 was in excellent shape when dropped but the ground has eaten it a bit on the front. If you look, you can see some spots on the sides next to the Lettering that still have some Mint Luster to it. Weird??? For Wheats, I dug 24 more of them. They are dated 11,17,17-d,(2)18,19-s,26,26-d,29-d,35-d,37,39-d,41,42-d,(5)44-d,45-d,(2)46-d,47-d, and 52-d. For Misc. Finds, I found a Lead Head from something? It hasn't been broken off of anything so I am thinking maybe it had to do with a Pencil Type Eraser Cover or some other Toy, a Marble, a Button with North Dakota on the Front and on the Back it reads D. Klein & Bro. Philadelphia, a couple Whatzit's, a Junk Ring, a Sea Shell, 2 other Buttons, and a Gold Plated Religious Pendant for a Necklace that reads Sacred Heart Of Jesus Protect Us on one side and the other reads O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray For Us. That's the finds this time. Part:2 will be coming up with the rest of the Pics that I couldn't get on this Post so stay tuned. Thanks for looking and as always, Good Luck and HH to you all on your next detecting adventures.[attachment 99225 LeadHead.jpg][attachment 99210 DirtySilver.jpg][attachment 99204 CleanedSilver.jpg][attachment 99197 DirtyNickelandCanadianPenny.jpg][attachment 99213 CleanedNickelandCanadianPenny.jpg]

Way to go James. That wasn't by chance the park you and I talked about at the meeting was it? I want to get back over there and try my luck again. I emailed Gary about that token but have not heard anything back from him yet.

Good to see you on here! Different Park, even though that Park I talked to you about should have some keepers yet but it will take some serious time and effort to get some oldies from it. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH.

WTG James on the digs. Very impressive. Congrats :clapping:

I've had my SE a little over a month and have found several wheat's and six silvers so far. Two quarters and the rest merc's and rosie's. Haven't dug a half yet, but still trying :super: Most of my digs are 4" or less. Anyway, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions. I'm sure these questions have been asked many times but I wanted to get the answers from you.

#1 - When you come across a deep target, do you rely mostly on the depth meter? What is the dead giveaway knowing the target is deep? Is the tone still high even though the target is deep, say 10" or deeper?

#2 - Do you use Ferrous or Conductive sounds? Somebody told me to use Ferrous with factory pre-sets and usually use 19 on my Sensitivity or higher with a steady Threshold. So far, these basic settings are working okay for me given the mineralization of the ground I've been hunting plus the coins are not deep at all. Have never had to use manual ground balancing.

#3 - I've been using the stock 10.5 coil and recently purchased a new Sunray 8" Stealth coil. Was wondering if you have used this coil, and if so, are there any special settings I need to tweak to give me the best results?

#4 - What are your Ferrous and Conductive numbers read when you dig injuns?

Congrats again James. Looking forward to lots more pics and finds you discover :beers:

Thanks!

James

YOUR KICKING SOME BUTT WITH THAT NEW COIL, NICE JOB JAMES :yikes:HH...PHIL

And a little head is always good.

Thanks for the reply and glad you liked the results. Good Luck and HH.

When I can go out and get Multiple Big Silver, now that is a Fantastic Outing. Too bad it doesn't happen more often but at least I always bring back a lot of Keepers when I do get out and hunt on the weekends. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you.

All I can say about the Pro Coil is "WHAT A COIL!!!Good Luck and HH in your next hunt.:detecting:

Glad to help you out James. Funny! Sounds like I'm talking to myself!:poke::rofl:

1. I rely on the Depth Meter to be accurate most of the time but it isn't always right on the money. It can be thrown off by Large, Deep Targets which will make the Depth Meter show the Target a lot Shallower than it really is and Small Targets, such as Small Copper Washers will read a lot Deeper than they really are and always will fool you no matter how seasoned a detectorist you are. The Signal Strength will depend on what the Target is. If it is a Penny, and it will depend on your Volume, Gain, and other Settings as well, it will give you enough of a Signal that will sound High for you to know to dig. Trash and Iron will also have an effect so it is hard to describe. If the ID is bouncing around a lot but the Signal is sounding pretty good, Dig It. It is the only way to know just what to look for when out hunting in your area.

2. I'm using Conductive Tones. I run a -10 Iron Mask on my XS that will give me just enough of a Signal from Good Targets next to Junk that I will work the Target until I feel it is good enough to dig. My XS only goes up to -16 Iron Mask which would be All-Metal. The Se has twice the amount of adjustment so a -10 on your Se would be a -22. Ferrous Tones can be good if you can learn them and stand all that Iron Drone Sounds.

3.I haven't used the Sunray 8" Coil but it is a Good Coil. You shouldn't have to change any Settings. Just go Slow and listen for the Deep Targets in with Trash.

4.I don't have a Ferrous Content Reading. I only have Conduct which will depend on the angle of the Coin. I have dug Indians as low as 23 and as high as 26 on Digital.

Hope this helps and Good Luck and HH to you. Any other questions, feel free to PM me a message and I will get back to you.

Nice Finds James. I decided to go ahead & order the pro coil. Hopefully, I'll do better once I get it (which might be a while before that happens).

Take care & HH

Dan.

On the IH pennies being James only has the XS he can only get the conductivity numbers while you have the SE like I do. On IH pennies I find they will read the same as a new zinc penny will which will be 7 ferrous and 24 conductivity and can vary too depending on how deep and if any trash around them. I find some of the older Wheaties will also read this way too and if I get one of these signals and it is shallow it is a new zinc penny or even a screw-cap, but if deeper I feel it is a older Wheaties or a IH penny.
Now me I like to run the ferrous tones and keep the whole top of the screen opened up so I can hear the iron that can fool you in conductivity as a low tone. Now if the whole screen is open the rusty bottle caps will sound like a coin, so I use edit and black out the right side bottom where they will read, but not too far left so you don't get in the nickle area. I will set my iron mask as a 31 to check out any iffy signal and sometime detect in that too like i did a couple weeks ago with James at the construction site and dig everything but iron. I can switch back and forth between my pattern and iron mask as the SE is very fast on switching between the two. My pattern I use looks like a T with the top opened up and down 1/2 inch so I get all my coins and comes down little to the right of center so I get my nickles and most gold rings I have tested plus many pull-tabs too.
I just swing along in my pattern so and easy and listen to the tones and anything iffy I will hit the iron mask button twice and have a open screen so I can hear everything around that area to tell if it is good or false signal.
My hearing is not good at all and in conductivity I was digging so much iron that sounded like a deep coin, now with ferrous I still get some that will fool me, but I notice I don't get as many nails and more coins in with iron than I did before.
I will say one thing James ND knows his Explorer XS which is what a person need to do and he is amazing what he does find in those areas many have given up on and sometimes I wonder if he has a 6Th sense to know where in the whole park the coins are. He is also a person that will take the time to help a person out so you too can do good.

Rick

Thank you Rick for the reply and giving some of your knowledge on the Se. As you have said here and in the past Rick, I must have a 6th Sense in knowing where the Oldies are. Once I find Keepers, Look Out! Then I'm Hot on the trail. Any info on that Ring Rick??? Have you taken it in and had tested by a Jeweler to see if it is Gold and if the Stone is real. Hope it is since that would really get you motivated in continuing to keep digging everything. And I am always happy to help out fellow detectorist's if they need some insight on Settings or any questions they may have about this great Hobby. Thanks again Rick and Good Luck and HH this month.

You won't be sorry about purchasing the Pro Coil. This thing is getting to be the 2nd Best Accessory a person could buy for their Explorer (in my opinion), with the Sunray X-1 Probe being the #1 Best Accessory to buy. It's lightweight, and the Shaft Attachment Area is Centered better for a more Balanced, Lighter feel which will add more time for you to detect since a lot of user's arm's feel like they were going to fall off after a few hours hunting with the Older Coils. Can't wait until you get yours and see if you can do any better with this Coil added to your arsenal. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.

Got my fill on Bigger Silver this last time out. Only thing is, I'm still HUNGRY!!! Maybe next time out, I will get the Extra Value Meal with maybe a Side Dish.:poke: Good Luck and HH GR.
