Found my first E Trac silver this weekend!

I hit a few areas when the temps climbed to 45 this weekend for a couple of hours. I'm still learning my machine, experimenting with different programs and settings, so all I found at the first two sites ws can slaw, pull tabs and clad. I remebered the tip in Andy's book about looking at potential sites from a "different" viewpoint, so I went to an area that was well used and determined that (about 10 feet to the left of the park) was the old outline of a foundation from a building. I was only swinging for about 5 minutes (a few shallow pull tabs and a couple of clad quarters), until I got a high pitched signal that bounced around a bit. I figured it was aluminum, but it was at 6-8 inch depth, and around the edge of the homestead, so I decided to dig. The ground in this area was extremely hard and compact, atypical for this area. Well, I finally got down and saw the silver looking right at me...a 1945 Merc in pretty good condition! I know that it's not a huge deal for many of you that find a lot of the older silver on a regular basis, but this is a big one for me considering that I was unable to find old silver with my MXT Pro (have used for over a year).
I had both of my machines out and have to say that I only used the MXT for about 10 minutes. I love the MXT, it's just something about the E Trac that makes me feel like there is huge potential for finds and the ability to really analyze the target before digging. As another member put it, using the E Trac and the X-5 is like a surgeon using a scaple. The thing has excellent tgt separation and really does seem to "see through and around" the trash for the good tgts that severybody else passed over.
I always seem to start finding the good stuff at the end of my hunts (getting dark, cold, etc.), so I plan to go back to this site this weekend and grid it out and do it right. Will post a picture later tonight after work.

Congrats on your first old silver. I remember the feeling when I found mine and it is a BIG deal.

I'm sure with the E-Trac there will be many more in your future.

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

E-TREC-Virgina: Finally finding old silver sure adds some hope to my year of can slaw and clad finds!

banditicey: Good to hear from you again. What I mean by old silver is coins from about 1945 and previous before the designs changed to what they are today (i.e. a merc dime vs. a rosie, etc.). I have found quite a few silver rosies (mainly 50's) and silver Washington quarters (50-60's) and a few small rings with the MXT Pro. I love the MXT, but need to figure out how I'm going to split time between the two machines because I feel like I might miss more with the MXT than I would with the E Trac. Maybe it's just me.

Goes4ever: I look forward to more silver finds and maybe a few gold rings in there as well! I used your site to help me get started and I would recommend it to everybody. Thanks!

Good job,I would like to know how many peoples first silver was a Mercury dime.Mine was a 1941.
Congrats, I hope you find many, many more.

Congrats! The first silver is always a big deal!

Believe it or not, the first Silver I found that i can recall was a Barber Dime, I did not know what it was when I found it!

I remember all my Firsts (Large Cent, Indian, Seated, Barbers) but cannot remember my first Mercury or Rosey or Washington!

Because I need reading glasses now it is always a thrill finding the Merc's over the Rosey's because it is easier to confirm the Silver

But, Finding Silver is Always a Thrill and I offer the same respect to the Rosey and the Washington!

Congratulations usafaviater for you FIRST OLD SILVER and I know there will be many more

Before I got the ET I had a DFX and I luved it but when I tried using it again when the ET was in the shop I could not go back
So go gently and donot guilt yourself just go out and enjoy the hunt

Regards and HH

It's been so long ago, but I think my first silver dime was a 1865 Liberty Seated Dime. I do not list it on my signature file, because I put it somewhere for safe keeping and now I cannot find it. I think I put it in one of my wife's jewelry boxes and she may have pitched it.

Sweet !!!!!

Congrats on your first ET silver and good luck with your new machine !

Yup, that silver sound really gets your attention. I'm in another silver poor area myself so each one is a big deal and if it's there I figure this machine is the most likely to find it!

My first was a Barber Quarter and my second a Merc Dime. Both in tough trashy sites with the X-5. That dime was about an inch under a AA battery and three eighths from a rusty nail about seven inches deep. With a find like that I figure I can find the stuff the others have missed!
