Yesterday, I went back to the site of the old church where I found the 1837 Capped Bust Half Dime and four 1800's dated Indian Cents two weeks ago.
As usual - it was raining but I've wanted to get back to this site and hunt it low and slow ever since I found the other old coins - and today was the only day I had free.
About ten minutes into the hunt I found the 1887 V Nickel ( only about 15 ft. from where I found the Half Dime) - then the 1898 Indian Cent - then the old button.
I was hunting in 2TF and towards the end of the two hour hunt I got a real mixed signal down approx. 6" - it sounded like iron - but I keep getting a pretty clear FE 12 - CO 39/40 signal in between the iron thumps. I've found at least 30 or 40 keys - but this turned out to be the first Skeleton Key I've ever found. The reason for the mixed signals was caused by the two large rusty nails that were just about laying on top of the key. Maybe this was the key to the front door of the Church - or someone just dropped their house key - guess we'll never know.
Found the 1935 Washington Quarter in a big field that I've been hunting this season. There's tons of clad coins at this site - so I've been only digging the deeper targets.
Not to many old ones there - but now and then I find a Buffalo or a Merc. - enough to keep me going back whenever I'm in the area.
