Frustrated - Anyone Else Experience This?

USAF

New member
After going to the town park & on 2 different instances I hit on a solid 38 and began to dig. After digging 6 inches checked again using the regular mode & pinpointing. Dug another 6 inches and same thing with the target still in the middle of the hole. Dug again and again to go down over 2 feet and still center of hole. Even widened the hole to over a foot in diameter and still shows in center of hole. This happened 2 times and that's lots of dirt to be sitting on the ground in a town park so was nervous. Finally gave up. Did continually check my dug dirt and there was nothing there. Have the stock coil. Have done numerous test gardens and thought I had the pinpointing down. Anyone have any hints as to what was going on?
Thanks!

The same has happend to me......Run as fast as you can

Sorry .....A little bit drunk...... It can be severar reasonsns.. Take a look in the manual,or read Andy Scahbbyss book

Good hunting. Jens.

I've read Andy's book and there's no examples of this issue. Can't imagine I would've had to go deeper than 2 feet.

Hi USAF,

This might be Ground Effect: here's a bit more on that.

I hope this helps.

At times the Auto Sensitivity setting of Safari might emit too much power for ground which is bad. The detector might produce stray noises and even put up stray target ID

Thanks Des that is valuable information. I have not experienced that problem but have went to manual for EMI and other issues. HH :minelab:

Next time you have that problem pinpoint using X method select the side of hole X is closest to.Cut on that side another 5 inches in will be elongated Iron object about 7 to 10 inches down.Even though it will read and pinpoint in center of hole.Yes I have had this happen several times a lot of times it will be just out of range of garret pin pointer on side of hole so you will keep digging. An extra tool that will help you is to have industrial magnet that has key ring on one end powerful magnet on other speeds recover gets ferrous junk out of hole fast or you will feel it pull toward iron object be careful not to get near cell phone, watch, credit card, etc.I have mine on retractable key chain holder that I wear on my left side away from everything else.

I had that happen to me several times when I first started. Sometimes a very large object is deep I once dug up a side mirror to an old pick up #38 about 1 1/2 ft down. With more practice you will get use to were things should be an what is ridiculous. Next is the point Prep made A LOT of frustration can be avoided by buying a garret pin pointer. I got one and would never hunt without it. DO NOT, repeat DO NOT try any of the cheap ones they are a complete waste of money. Save up and buy a garret you will never regret it.

Perhaps your hitting a buried 57 chevy...just kidding of course...my thoughts your are hitting an extremely large object which could be picked up at several feet...of course the depth reading would be off as they are calibrated for a coin object..also extremely rusted iron (perhaps a horshoe to the side of plug at 6 or 7 inches would act this way and imitate a coin for some reason this type of target will not pinpoint correctly and is always off to the side of the hole..Remember if you signal covers a lot of ground in pinpoint leave it lie as a coin will just cover a small area.
We have all encountered this when we started out but after a while you will just let an object that covers a wide area alone. Now if you know a strong box was buried in the area and thats what you are looking for bring a shovel..

Dan-Pa. Useful pin-point hint there. That too, is how I "qualify" digging an apparent large target. I'm guessing I've let a couple of strongboxs' remain, but hope not!
I rarely use the manually sensitivity, but should give it more opportunity.

Hi guys, I found that if a coin is not flat but on edge with a bit of angle, it will throw the pinpoint off. The deeper the coin, the further off center. I did an air test to verify this with pinpoint on and if you hold the coin on edge in line with the detect line of the coil and then tilt it slightly, the signal will pinpoint off center. The more you tilt to a certain point or further away you go, the more it is affected. Sometimes over 100mm off center. I hope this helps. Love my Safari.

Underground power line?

I had the same experience and I found a large metal plate very deep...

Do you have a hand held pinpointer bro?
