had a club hunt at an old, but still in use, fairgrounds today --- some of the 5,000 bike riders camped at this fairgrounds a few weeks ago, so we figured we would find some clad, etc. --- well, the ground up here in NE Iowa has dried up something terrible and is now rock hard, plus was about 91 degrees today --- long story short, was working my way back to the car for a short club meeting and was swinging the coil over some rock hard ground where the vehicles have worn all the grass off and got a stong quarter signal that showed about 1 inch in depth --- I even pinpointed it with my Garrett Pro-Pointer --- figured it was another recently lost clad quarter, so I took out the digger and pryed like crazy to get the bugger out of the cement like ground mixed with a little rock and out pops this little puppy --- right along with a great big gouge!!! Moral to the story --- always use caution while digging, because you never know what's going to pop out of the ground.

That's the shizzle.

Congrats on the quarter Jim. We have all scratched coins. One of my favorite coins I have ever found I scratched. It was an 1885 Morgan dollars. Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint some coins so how big of a plug do you cut? Nice coin even with the scratch!

Hey Ken --- if the ground right there wouldn't of been so darn hard and packed in even harder from all the vehicles driving over it, I don't think I would of scratched it, plus being so shallow I never dreamt it would be a Barber Quarter. I try to dig a nice plug, especially if it's a deep target.

Hope to hunt with ya sometime this fall!!! Need a little rain!

Nice find Jim. Shallow and scratched or not! Thanks for the story and the picture!

Lovely coin. Same thing happened to me once here in Australia. I got a copper signal and very shallow so I thought it was one of our annoying little 2 coins. Prodded with my screwdriver and pulled out a 1934 penny at about half an inch deep!

You just never know do ya?
