google earth overlay

for those that use the old topo map here is a trick i use a bunch.

if you download a topo or scan one into your computer you can over lay that topo in google earth.
you may have to open the topo in a photo editor to change its size or crop. i use photoshop but any editor should work.
once you have the area you want cropped out or resized save it as a diffrent name in your google earth folder.

now in google earth open the place you have the topo for and zoom in to about the same scale as your topo map is.
next find the button for overlaying and then brouse to you new topo you saved in your google earth folder. open it and posistion it ontop of the area you have open in google earth. once you have it matching you can lower the oppacity of the topo so that you can see the sat view and the topo.
now name it and save it.

when i get a chance ill post a pic of how it looks. im at work typeing this with my phone so excuse the mistakes.

here is another trick. you can take snap shots in google earth you can even snapshot an overlay pic you made.
now dont print it just save it and send it to your cell phone. then when your out and about without a laptop or you maps you can bring up the pics on your phone.
just a trick i use to keep my load lite wile im in the field.

if your in southeast texas then yea i gave away a virgin site but i do that once in a wile just to see who will use the free research i did. lm?o . anyway have fun hope it all helps someone.

I have been doing the overlay thing for a couple of years and to add to your information If after you have your overlay made just hover the mouse pointer over the place you want to find and it will give you coordinates at the bottom of the screen. Then load them into your GPS as a way point and go find it. I have relocated several spots of old home sites, race tracks. and places that don't exist any longer. Just remember the way points will only get you as close as the accuracy of the map you overlaid. Have fun.
I just about forgot to mention that you can email the file to a hunting buddy who has Google Earth. When the email comes in with the file attachment , he just opens the attachment and it automaticly opens google earth with the overlay on it for him. He just needs to save it upon closing and it will then be in his saved places at the left of the Google Earth map.

Thanks for all the info. My biggest problem is finding old topo maps online. I live in deeeep east Texas but work a lot in Northern Indiana. Any spots to locate those old maps would be appreciated. TMAN...

ill put up a link to hundreds of old topos for texas when i get home. i was just up in chireno texas thanksgiving day. my family is from the nacodoches area.
i bet i spelled that wrong lol.

go to the biggest library in the area you want to hunt and ask for historical atlases. Take shots (Highest resolution) of what you want (I usually take pictures of everything while I'm there) and you're ready to start overlaying. Mike
