Got my 2nd DATED SLQ in 35 years and a SWEET Sterling stickpin I need help ID'ing.:super:

Thanks C-Too.
The pinpoint is hard enough to deal with compared to the SE...but man when you switch on the Sunray probe....that is when I really don't like it. The probe is just not anywhere near as effective as it is on the SE. That has nothing to do with the probe of course....it just functions as the EXII does.

Thanks Joe. I appreciate it.

I hope you get one soon. I have found several with no dates over the years...but dated ones are tough.

It only took me 34 years to find my first. I hope yours comes much quicker.

Thanks G.R.

I am hunting less than half as much as last year...if even that much. What you said is true though....I look forward to it even more.

Take care buddy.

Bryce,

First of all congrats on the coin!

Second, I understand your problem with the pinpoint except my view is a 180 from yours--I hate the pinpoint on the SE! Funny, eh? I guess it's what you are used to. For me, I can't stand VCO. The "knife edge" of the EX II is like the Sovereign. Narrow & accurate. All I do is back the coil off the target and where the signal drops off is where the target is. With the SE, I am never sure where the high point of the VCO is. Drives me nuts.

You know what ML should do? Put both options on one machine. It's only software, right?

And you are right, the EX II is the best of the series for handling iron. And it also rules on saltwater beaches.

Keep the finds coming, buddy!

Bill

after many years on the Fisher CZ's....I just love that style of pinpoint feature. I believe you have a few years of CZ experience under your belt too though:)..so it's a matter of personal preference as you stated.

I remember when the SE first came out that a lot of people hated the pinpoint...which I loved. In fact I remember being one of the very few who liked it.

What I should have clarified a little better in my post was that the EXII pinpoint isn't so bad to my ears...and not that hard for me to deal with. It's when I switch over to the Sunray probe to investigate the hole...that I hate it.

Once I get the hole dug...I can't correctly pinpoint the target with the probe. The probe just sounds all over the hole.

With the SE...I switch over to pinpoint and I can usually get within 1/4" of it very fast.

I also like the way the SE ID's targets in the AM pinpoint mode.

I do remember when the SE first came out though...and everyone was having some issues with stability...me being one of them.
I had one with a "nutty" coil...and split screen issues.

It seemed as though we were all looking for a way to "settle" the SE down...and almost no one liked the pinpoint on it except me:biggrin:

After a few hunts with the EXII I have decided the following...It's awesome in iron:thumbup:....I suck at digging lower conductors:help:....and I can't make the pinpoint work for me the way I want:cool:

I'm gonna' find a way to deal with it though...because it is a very smooth machine...very stable for me.

I agree 100%....Minelab should give us the choice. Just push a button and pick the style of pinpoint we want:clapping:

Take care Bill...and I hope all is well with you.

I bet that was a thrill for you and I haven't ever found a cash coin either so that is a good find by itself.
I always like to see your posts. Thanks for taking the time to explain the sounds you hear and what your screen looks like.
My hands would have been shaking too bud.
Have a good one...Kennon

Bryce, nice finds, yea I have the same problem very little time to hunt other priorities.Eventually I 'll find some time to metal detect.HH Ron

Congrats on your 2nd Standing Liberty Quarter with a date!:super: 35 years and only this to be your 2nd with a date just makes it that much more sweeter when you find them. I see you found an Old Pencil Sharpener also. I found one of them last year! Pretty neat items to find. The Foreign Coin is a Chinese Cash Coin. Not sure how to translate it but some can be really old. Congrats on a lot of nice keepers and Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you on your next road trip or outing.

Bryce nice finds again bud. I'm on the road for the next 5 days so I won't be hunting.
I am checking on getting the grass whacked down at the cabin spot so maybe you and I can try to squeak a coin or 2 out that we missed.

Hello Bryce,

Here are some links for identifying Chinese Cash coins.
I am fairly certain that is what you have found.

http://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/china/china.htm#index
There is a ton of great information in this link; it just take some time to slog through.

http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/coins/coinpics/chin-struck.htm
Another good link here. And of course it will take some time to search through.

A great trick that I use is to take a digital picture of the coin which you already have.
Then I enlarge it on my computer screen when trying to find the fine details of the Chinese characters.

http://www.lioncoins.com/nippon.htm
This site gives a great explanation about reading the characters from the right to the left.
There is also some good information about the typical markings for the different reigns and so forth.

Link to an old Japanese Copper coin that I found and identified.

Good luck on identifying your coin.

TOO MUCH DIRT, NOT ENUFF TIME!

Bruce,
I KNOW ur lying so please stop it!!

only "busting ya alls"

keep swinging man, you've earned it. I finally went out today and got a couple wheaties and such, felt good, talked to a lot of kids as usually and got burned skin as a result. Suck 'em down!

Bryce, the coin with the square hole is a Chinese coin. There are some sites on the web at which you'll be able to identify it. The best site I've found is a Calgary (Library or Museum site), it shows a range of coins and you should be able to identify yours. The old Chinese coins reflect the era of that particular Emperor, rather than specific dates. Some of the markings refer to the era, some to the place of minting. Check it out...it could be the oldest coin you've found. Sapper.
